RenesPoints Rookie

Welcome to a weekly feature on the Renés Points blog. Each week this series covers in a “rookie” way either a Delta or travel related theme and attempts to break down to a basic level each topic. You can read up on all the previous posts HERE. Now on to this week’s feature.

Gosh I love the Fly Delta APP!

The Fly Delta APP really is a great tool. Not perfect, but I use it constantly when I fly Delta. One of the things I always do when I get to the airport (or even often before that) is to start tracking all my inbound jets that I will be on that day.

I find this a really useful tool because it can alert me to issues even before Delta reaches out and tells me I am about to “have” an issue if you will. It really is so simple to do. Pull up your next flight and scroll down.

If you click on VIEW MORE you will get much more data on your current flight you have chosen.

And it will also show you your inbound flight. Click that number.

You will then see that flight, then here are a bunch of things I do next. I start “watching” the flight to get quicker access to it (will show you that later). I also note the flight time, if it is late, early or even arrived the night before (always nice). I also pay attention to the gate it is coming into (but that can change and often does).

With the flight tracker you can see where your inbound jet is at the current time. Do note with some international routes it can yield bizarre results at times.

I also use it to see what gate I will be coming into and my estimated time of arrival on my current flight in the air. While this is free on Gogo and Delta, many are reporting slow or bad performance as of late. I hope this clears up soon.

Lastly if you have clicked “watching” on all your flights, as well as your inbound flights, you then have them all in one quick tab in the APP to reference without as many clicks. Very useful data.

I very few times fly other airlines but I find the Fly Delta App to be, not just well done, but offers so much great info that I rarely ever look at screens in airports. That, to me, is so useful. Plus, by doing all this, I can avoid heading to the gate (and leaving a club) before I have to by seeing if my aircraft is delayed etc.

Do you track your inbound / outbound flights in the APP as well? – René

I hate phone screen protectors but I carry one in case of this happening to me…

I have never EVER broken a screen. I have had “smart-ish” phones for a long time. My first ever smart phone was a Samsung i300. OK, so calling it a “smart phone” is pushing it just a little bit. A palm pilot with a phone is a better description I guess, but I had one of these forever. I did use a screen protector on it most of the time, not due to risk of … Continue reading

The Fly Delta Android Wear App is MUCH improved (but not perfect).

The past two days have really been fun. I enjoyed, not just one, but two bumps on this trip and still got to spend some time at the Miami Centurion Lounge (more on that later). I also got to again have the chance to play with my LG G Android watch and Delta has pushed with their latest APP update a bunch of improvements and they do work MUCH better. You can see my original … Continue reading

Review: LG G Android Wear watch & Fly Delta APP performance including boarding pass, TSA & more.

I really struggled if I should do this review as a two part review, that is, part one about the watch and the second about using the watch to fly Delta but decided just to focus on the Delta part since we are after all Delta flyers. I will just touch on the watch itself in my closing remarks. Let me also start out with some disclaimers. First off, I was not given this watch, … Continue reading

From “enhancement” to “shenanigans” Delta is now blocking seat map choices! A bug or something else?

Oh Delta. Delta, Delta, Delta (not the fraternity – just irritated and repeating Delta). What are you up to this time. Please stop this. What am I talking about? Last week I had a post where it seemed Delta may just have improved what seats we can see on Delta jets (but this enhancement did not last long). Today things are different and even worse than before. We know our dearest Delta does have the … Continue reading

Delta seat map bug or seat map enhancement? Still not sure what we have here.

For those of us who have to still suffer flights on CRJ200s, we should be well aware that Delta blocks seats until 24hrs before flight and will show them as occupied on the Fly Delta APP when we view the seat map. Now in the old days you could use Expert Flyer and other tools to see the real “load” on the flight and know if there were open seats. After that, one of the … Continue reading

Travel question: Do you use a laptop privacy screen? Why or why not?

Being a travel blogger is interesting at times. Some of us, well those of us who fly United that is, have gotten in real trouble for taking photos on-board aircraft. I mean REAL trouble. Thankfully Delta is not nearly as stupid as United when it comes to cabin photos. Personally I try to be aware of people and leave them out of shots as much as I can, but at the same time if someone … Continue reading

Rethinking my stand on the BOINGO wifi service – Did they upgrade?

Last year when I played around with the FREE Boingo service I got from my non-Delta Business AMEX Platinum card <–LINK (you get it with the personal card too btw) I was not all that impressed. However now that my wife has the add-on user card for Skyclub entrance and so much more I started to tinker with it again and wanted to see if she could get it as a perk as well. It … Continue reading

Rookie Wednesday: Don’t delete THESE kinds of e-mails from Delta. It could cost you big time!

Welcome to a weekly feature on the Renés Points blog. Each week this series covers in a “rookie” way either a Delta or travel related theme and attempts to break down to a basic level each topic. You can read up on all the previous posts HERE. Now on to this week’s feature. I give Delta IT a bunch of flack and deservingly so. The award page is beyond hopelessly broken and it took the … Continue reading

Try not to worry about all the bugs on Delta.com’s website. They will fix them one day (maybe)!

The above was how Delta was displaying my next year’s status. I mean, it is disappointing to be MQD exempt (having spent over $25,000 on a Delta AMEX card <-LINK already this year) and to have over 125,000 MQM rollover miles and Delta tells me I will be a medallion for just ONE month next year. 🙁 Delta has now fixed this bug. Then we had other bugs that recently stressed out and frustrated some … Continue reading

GoGo TEXT for Android now for AT&T, Verizon, T-Moblie, Sprint & more!

Since we can not make phone calls on-board Delta flights (and GOSH I am happy with that choice from the mothership), having the ability to text on-board is very nice via GoGo. If you are an Android user, they have expanded the carriers who can use the GoGO text “beta” app for Android devices. Now here is the tricky bit – you have to sign up and send a text on the ground before you … Continue reading

Delta Air Lines FACEBOOK page is HACKED – WARNING – VIRUS will load!

Please, for now, DO NOT got to the Delta Air Lines Facebook page and click on the post above. Their site has been hacked. If you do click on it you will get a virus! My AVG caught it, but still not good to tempt fate – just stay clear of the site for now. Twitter has confirmed the HACK and they are working to fix, but it has been over half an hour and … Continue reading

Question? How long should Delta check-in take? How about ~3 hours & 6+ reps!

Yesterday during a press interview I was asked why I value my elite status with Delta. I had a bunch of answers but one of them that I stressed was the outstanding level of service I receive from Delta elite reps. I stand by that and have it confirmed on a weekly basis. For example when I call Delta, most times, they have my itineraries up on the screen and are ready to help with … Continue reading

Whining about phones – my love / hate realationship with Sprint, Android & Samsung!

What does any of this have to do with Delta, SPG or any other Skyteam member or Delta partner you may ask? Well, your Delta points blogger uses Samsung Android phones on Sprint and to access GoGo wifi (ah ha, that is the tie-in GoGo onboard – OK I am pushing it, but just humor me for today)! 🙂 I will say I do like that Delta has been quicker to release updates to the … Continue reading

More big changes to Fly Delta App 3.1 – Award booking & other useful changes

The past few days I flew 8 segments with Delta. The APP had lots of issues and was a constant source of frustrations. I could NOT check in half of the time (sometimes due to 4 segments within 24 hours – a known bug), other times even when checked in it would just not pull up my boarding pass. Both TexasYankee and I got the error screen above several times. Irritating to say the very … Continue reading
