It makes me cringe every time someone tells me they just popped into Best Buy and got such a good deal on a sale this week. My first question is always:

Did you start at the Delta shopping portal so you could get 3x or 4x points on the purchase?

Then the bewildered look on the face is the same no matter the gender or age.

So what am I talking about? While I am not a FAN of the people who run the Delta shopping portal they are all we have. Also remember Best Buy has a loyalty program called Reward Zone.

Now if you do the math it is more like 2x points per dollar as once you hit $250 in spend you get a $5 coupon that spends just like cash! If you have some really big buys and end up spending $2500 or more in a year with them, they then reward you with “silver status” (their only status – really?) and a 25% bonus on points for the rest of the year and the following year as well!

The end result of all of this is you earn 1 point from the shopping portal, 1 point from the Reward Zone, and 1 point when you pay for it at last with your DELTA AMEX card!

So please never walk into a store and just buy something. Buy it online to get max points and then just go to the store and pick up the item you purchased! – René

PS – The Capital ONE 100,000 point card is BACK but the terms are not as good as last round. Be sure you read THIS POST by Gary before you jump on this. I have the card so can not get the points again per the T&C. Also note SMALL BUSINESS CARD SPEND DOES NOT qualify for for the points match. So unless you spent $50,000+ on a “US consumer travel credit card” and can submit that cards “year end statement” showing that, you will not get the full point match. So proof of 20k spend=40k points or 30k spend=60k points etc.

  1. That title is misleading unless you forgot to add something in that. According to your summary, you get 2 miles per dollar spent at Best Buy – your title says triple/quadruple Skymiles. The other point you mention (or 2) is a Bestbuy point, not a Skymile. So it is only 2 times, not 3 or 4. Even if you are counting the RewardZone points, that still is not triple/quadruple as they are different programs and do not multiply with each other.

  2. Rene,

I laughed when I read this post as I have been preaching this to my family now. In fact, I have basically “educated” them for any retailer that offer free shipping and the prices are the same as the store, why would you ever buy from the store directly? Nearly every big box is on the Delta program or Ultimate Rewards program. (UR is often better for rates, but can’t be transfered to Delta; works for me as I sometimes use United.)

  3. I buy electronic gift cards from that can be used instantly. There are several of these online resellers of gift cards. Using Best Buy as an example, I could save up to 5% (on top of the savings Rene mentioned) on my total purchase just by using the gift card that I paid for with my Delta AMEX card. Still able to use the Delta portal and reward zone as well. And, if the item is on sale, well then…

  4. Great comments. You can also go into your bestbuy reward zone account and adjust the coupon level upward so you get larger coupons and offers at higher spend levels. Worst thing about this is the coupons are only good for short periods of time which I hate.

  5. I believe if you use the American express portal you get 4X points right now for best buy (at least it was the last time I check). I know that’s not delta miles but you can convert that.

  6. Several times, I’ve gone into Best Buy, found what I wanted, then walked over to the computer section and logged into Award Wallet, then Delta, and purchased it online. It means I sometimes have to wait around 10 minutes for them to get it together before I pick it up, but it’s the best of both worlds.
