I went for the 20,000 point Barclays World Arrival Mastercard card with my last round and have just got the points. So, I was hoping, they would consider bumping up my bonus since they now have a 40,000 point card (EXPIRED) that is such a great deal (that everyone is talking about) for buying travel like Delta flights and earning MQM’s & RDM’s for the flights!  Well here is the response after two secure emails pleading my case:

“We regret that we are unable to add an additional 20,000 bonus miles on your account. Upon review, you were approved for 20,000 bonus miles after $1,000 in Net Purchases within 90 days of your Credit Card Account being opened. You will also receive your 2 miles for each $1 of all Net Purchases made using your Card. This one-time 20,000 miles bonus offer is valid for first-time Cardmembers with new accounts only. Existing Cardmembers and existing accounts are not eligible for this offer. This is a limited-time offer and may be cancelled at any time without notice. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.” – Barclays Bank

So, just like AMEX who does not ever match a better offer, we can see that Barclays has no interest in matching a later better deal. I have not yet called to speak to a rep to see if I could have more success this route, but from what I have seen this will fare no better but I would love to know from any readers who have tried how the results went. Do you have any successful results of bumping the bonus with Barclays?

This truly is one of the best deals Barclays has come out with for a very long time and I doubt you will ever see a better one from them so if you are looking for a flexible rewards card this is one you should seriously look at.

However, when it comes to matching deals, CHASE is still KING in regards to bonus offers. I think offering to match is a wise move by Chase as it lets you do things like apply for a INK BOLD (please see Ink Business Unlimited or Ink Business Cash Credt Card) or INK Plus (please see Chase Ink Business Preferred Card) or Chase Sapphire Preferred® card with full confidence that if a better deal comes up inside of 90 days you will be able to get that offer. This really promotes confidence in CHASE. I wish the others would see the wisdom in this and do the same! – René

  1. Re: AMEX – I was able to squeeze an extra 5k RDMs after calling because of a better offer 2 weeks later, but it was “no go” on the extra 5k MQMs.

  2. Re the Barclaycard Arrival: I got the 40K points after $500 spend, 2x points on restaurants and travel, and no annual fee back in January.

Now there is this new offer than gives 40K points after $1000 spend and 2x points everywhere, $89 annual fee waived first year.

Do you think I might ask them to extend the 2x everywhere feature to my card?

Or, is it possible to apply for this current offer as well?

    Appreciate any thoughts on this.

  3. Do you have to redeem your miles with barclays? Or do they transfer out to your program of choice? Thanks!

  4. Just got approved for 40K, can’t wait to start using the card for my local travel. I get discounts at hotels, so this card will be great to get free hotel stays.

  5. Another vote for Chase: I got 30k points for united mileageplus explorer, friend got 50k a week later. I called, they forwarded to marketing, next statement an additional 20k in miles appeared.

  6. @Chris – you make my point perfect. You have a positive view of Chase and i bet you will be more willing to get a Chase card over others right!

  7. Actually, AmEx has matched all the past offers that have gotten better after I applied. Please note that I never send a secure message, I always call in.

In fact, when I got the Delta Gold last year, there was a 35K offer, it went down to 30K and initially go that. I called them up and told them about the 35K, they matched it and gave me an apology 5K additional (total 40K SkyMiles!).

Similar situations with the AmEx PRG and Platinum, all matched better offers.

  8. Amex bumped up my 50k gold card promo to 75k. First call, they said no. No way. Then I called back a week later and actually gave them the promo code off the app for the 75k. I also explained that I had a long relationship with AE. She only said someone would call me back at some point and let me know. Then I received an e-mail saying sorry for the delay in posting the 75k. I hadn’t even met the spend yet so didn’t know what the hell they were talking about. Sure enough still $5k short of meeting spend 75k popped into my account. I called to thank them and ask the reason the 75k was put in so quick. The CSR on the phone said “don’t look a gift horse in the mouth”. At that moment I just said thanks, hung up and laughed all the way to the bank of points.

  9. I had the same type response from Barclay awhile back when I signed up for the US air card with a 30k link instead of a 40k or whatever.
“And Don tell the other contestants what they will be taking home”

  10. A little over a year ago I got the 40k US Air Mastercard (or was it 30-35 … don’t remember). I THOUGHT I had the 10k anniversary bonus, too, but it turns out I didn’t use that link. Dummy. Anyway, when I tried to get them to add it, as it was being offered at the the time, they gave me the same speal.

So, I canceled the card and got the one I had originally intended on getting. Even more bonus points for me! Wouldn’t have been easier just to agree to the anniversary bonus?

I am not at all impressed with Barclay’s customer support. When I called to cancel card #1, not even 1 question as to why. They just happily canceled it, which was really ok with me, but the fact that they weren’t concerned at all?
