I will have a review soon of my stay at the SPG LAX. It was a great stay. I slept well and was 100% recharged for my final two legs of my 12 leg mileage run. I even scored my first battlefield upgrade and the LAX-JFK flight was very very nice and will cover that soon too! But for today, let’s power up again.

On my trip I have used my ANKER ASTRO2 power brick a bunch. I have one more to give away So the rules, as always, are HERE! Then, you need to answer this simple question:

“What is the best SPG upgrade you have received and ALSO what hotel was it?

That simple. I have found SPG to be one of the best hotels in both product and service. If you don’t have an SPG card yet, you are missing out! – René

  1. I am waiting to receive my SPG card, but am looking forward to using it a lot and getting the upgrades and deals I keep reading about. This card will be a keeper!

  2. No SPG status so no upgrades. :(. We’ll see how Crossover works!

  3. Without a doubt – penthouse suite upgrade for six nights at the Westin Moana Surfrider on Waikiki Beach.

  4. Have yet to get one, but hope with delta/spg crossover rewards I will have a good story to tell soon!

  5. My best upgrade has been being bumped to Business Class for a flight from Rome to DTW. The Presidential Suite at an Idaho Holiday Inn Express and Suites was surprisingly nice, too!

  6. Got upgraded to Club Floor as a Gold on a last minute weekend trip to Music City Sheraton in Nashville. Lounge was closed for the weekend, so we received passes to their big Southern breakfast buffet each morning.

  7. I’ve never had an SPG upgrade, but I got a Westin club floor on a Hotwire purchase. The breakfast and view of Seattle was great.

  8. Best SPG Upgrade so far has been an ocean front suite at the Westin in Aruba

  9. Haven’t stayed at a Starwood property for a long time since my previous experiences have been bad, though I do have some status via Amex. I will probably try again soon since people seem to be quite positive about Starwood properties lately. Perhaps I’ve had bad luck or perhaps they’ve improved. And if a chain can improve I can certainly give them another try. I like to reward places which treat people right and avoid the ones who don’t.

Best was at Chiang Mai—- Le Meridien. Fantastic property! Couldn’t believe they cleaned the room 2x each day! I was so pampered!

  11. Best was to the club floor at the Westin Washington Dulles, but then I have done very few stays due to my focus on Hyatt

  12. On my honeymoon. Westin Verasa Napa Valley. Upgraded to One bedroom King Premium suite from a regular one king deluxe room.

  13. Easy! We got upgraded to a beautiful suite with butler service at the St Regis Bahia in Puerto Rico. We even stayed on points.

  14. No SPG upgrades as I haven’t used them much….Will try them more with the Delta/SPG crossover!

Best was the W New York on Lex – the first W in the world! Was upgraded to a Extreme Wow Suite with a terrace. Couldn’t have been happier – was a truly SPG moment!

  16. It had to be Le Meridien. Phuket, got a lovely room, buffet breakfast, and paid for 3 nights, got 2 free during the week.

  17. No SPG status yet, so no real upgrades. Just the SPG floor at an airport hotel which got me free water bottles. Thinking about getting Amex Platinum card so I can get status before my October stay at W Barcelona.

  18. I just received my SPG Amex card 3 weeks ago and am presently charging everything possible to meet the minimum spend for the bonus points. I have minimal Starwood status but perhaps enough for an upgrade, will have to wait and see. Truly looking forward to using the Starpoints for my next vacation.

  19. Best upgrade was a couple of years ago in early December at the Westin Maui. We were upgraded to a suite in the ocean tower. It was a gorgeous suite with amazing views of the ocean and black rock in front of the Sheraton down the beach. The resort was pretty empty since it was before the holiday travel season, but the upgrade was very much appreciated. I’m only gold with spg.

  20. Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa, Edinburgh upgraded to a Club, castle view suite. Very nice!

  21. Was upgraded to a suite at the Sheraton in downtown Toronto a few years back. Great view of the city!

  22. I would have to say the SLS in Beverly Hills. It was for my 5th anniversary, and it was extra special because we were able to have family watch our daughter. It’s funny though because we ended up talking about her the whole time.

  23. I was upgraded to the presidential suite at the SPG on St. John’s for my honeymoon.

  24. Not a big upgrade but my wife and I were moved up to the Executive level floor at the Sheraton Tornoto while staying on a priceline stay. Gave us free breakfast and evening drinks and snacks.

  25. 1. Private pool villa at Le Meridien Koh Samui
    2. a 1200 square foot suite at the St Regis Bangkok
    3. a beautiful suite with a fireplace in each room at the St Regis Deer Valley

    I love SPG

My first International stay is at the Le Méridien Ra Beach Hotel & Spa, Spain in two weeks. My friend was upgraded to the deluxe suite a year ago, maybe I can score this year!

  27. Club level suite with a huge wrap around balcony/patio at Sheraton New York.

  28. Upgraded to a sweeping oceanfront suite at the Sheraton Miramar in Vina del Mar Chile as an SPG gold…

  29. The best is a cool corner suite at the W hotel ft laurdale , it’s a glass box across the street from the ocean !!!

  30. So far only upgrades to higher rooms but not to a really amazing space. Some day.

  31. The One-Bedroom Oceanfront Suite at the Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa. It has a huge patio that has great views of the ocean.

  32. I booked a room in the Tarrytown Sheraton via Priceline. I was a newly minted SPG member and had just opened the credit card. Upon check in, they asked for a credit card for incidentals, and then upgraded us to the club floor. The club floor had amenities such as bottled drinks and espresso coffee in the morning. Because it was the weekend, we received two vouchers for a free hot breakfast in the restaurant. We could order whatever we wanted off the menu.

  33. Got upgraded to a ‘cool corner room’ at W hotel in Hong Kong thanks to being ‘Gold’ SPG. Too bad I only stayed 12 hours in HK…

  34. No international upgrades but quite a few nice suite upgrades — NYC, Chicago, SFO

  35. No SPG upgrades – or stays even yet… hoping to stay soon since I keep racking up crossover rewards with Delta!

  36. I’ve never received one! Hopefully that will change soon 🙂

  37. Two bedroom villa at the Westin St. John, although I’m hoping my best SPG upgrade is yet to come!

  38. Still working on getting my status, so I have yet to get an upgrade!

  39. Does an upgrade to the SPG floor count (Sheraton ABQ)…cause as a Gold, I’ve received nuthin else! Guess I can dream 🙂

  40. Top suite at atlanta peach tree… But on 9-11-01 and staying on a the top floor of tallest building in a major US city NOT where I wanted to be that night!

  41. At the Sheraton Buenos Aires i was ugraded to a free continental breakfast as a gold

  42. I was traveking in Shanghai a few years ago and booked a room with points at newly built Sheraton. As the date approached got an email that the hotel will not be opening on time and they offered me the St Regis for the same point! Scored on that one!

  43. phill gold Reply

Unfortunately I havnt received one yet. Here’s hoping…..

  44. There are a lot of great upgrades with SPG. Some are:

    1. A huge suite at St. Regis Atlanta with bottle of wine. Over 1000 sf. Bathroom was bigger than most hotel rooms.

    2. Suite at Sheraton Grande Bangkok with butler service.

    3. Suite at Westin Beijing with massage recliner, telescope and giant flat-screen TV that rises out of cabinet at foot of bed.

    4. Suite at Hotel Bristol Warsaw with a library.

  45. Jack Barbella Reply

Got upgraded to a suite at the DTW Westin. Not bad after IRROPS.

  46. I don’t have any SPG stays to date. That might change once I get my Plat AMEX, which will give me SPG gold, which will let me earn SPG points via crossover rewards for my Delta spend, which will hopefully get me free nights, which will hopefully get upgraded!

  47. Hard to beat the upgrade I got at the Aruba Westin……..what a score !

  48. So interesting to read other’s experiences, especially mentions if Thailand which is where I am at the moment (having missed my flight this morning to Bali). I don’t have this card (or SPG status, so it all sounds so enticing!

  49. 19 stays as gold this year, and not even offered club level unless I paid for it on all of the 19 stays…reading the others I might have to call spg next time I check in at the local sheraton.

  50. Looks like I’m actually in good company saying no SPG status so no upgrades!

  51. Sheraton Pentagon – big suite and my daughter had her own room, which was wonderful!

  52. RestlessLocationSyndrome Reply

St. Regis San Francisco to a 1 bd suite a few yrs ago as plat on an award stay.

  53. Seattle Westin. 20th floor with and excellent view of both the sound and the city. Great stay on our honeymoon!

  54. St Regis Aspen when they had a club floor. It was the best club floor ever!

  55. Hotel National Moscow, top floor kremlin view room. Best view in all of Moscow.

  56. No upgrades, but I’m only a Gold so far……Lately, been getting a 4 p.m. checkout & free internet on each stay (on vaca’s lately so they have been good perks!)

  57. None & None. I’ve never stayed in an SPG house (that I know of), but I’ll add them to the list of acceptable houses. The bonus for getting one of their cards, is fairly good as well, so I’ll ask. And heavens yes, send the Brick prize my way. -C.

  58. Sadly I don’t have a SPG card anymore :(. Got rid of it a while ago to make room for some other cards :P! I don’t think I ever received an upgrade anyway when I did have the card (didn’t stay at a Starwood a lot).

  59. Nothing yet, just signed up for SPG and crossover. Also have the AmEx Plat (new this year, with 100k MR deal), so I have SPG gold. Trip next week to NY, hoping for my first upgrade.

  60. Deluxe Ocean Front Suite (1 of 8 on the property) at the Sheraton Maui Resort– amazing!!

  61. Le meridian in Atlanta. Got a suite upgrade on the top floor from a king

  62. Never had an SPG upgrade, but La Meridian in Phuket would be great!

  63. Presidential suite at the Sheraton- Columbus over valentines day. It was a terrific surprise!

  64. Corner room and lounge access for several days at Westin Indianapolis.

  65. I invariably tend to see your first Saturday post but miss your Swag Saturday post because you post it later in the day. I’m in MN. Have not had a SPG upgrade ever.

  66. From two free (SPG points) rooms at the Westin Europa upgraded to two connecting suites with four large windows right on the Grand Canal. Especially nice since the previous night the four of us had squeezed into one room at a Holiday Inn Express. My kids still talk about the hotel as their favorite.

  67. Oceanfront corner room at Weston moana surfrider in Waikiki was best upgrade.

  68. Westin Europa in Venice upgraded to Grand Canal view; and Westin Excelsior in Florence, upgraded to a nice suite overlooking the Arno.

  69. Had planned to dip into the SPG waters with St. Regis Bora Bora in my sights, but crunched some numbers and have opted to focus on PriorityClub/IHG rewards, to add some time on Moorea.

  70. I am a lifetime Platinum SPG member (1074 nights and counting). A few years ago, my wife and I went to Venice and stayed at the The Westin Europa & Regina on points. We were going to be there for 3 nights before going to Rome. Normally, on Points you get the smallest room, but we were there during the slow winter months. My wife is a teacher so we went during here February break. We got to the hotel and the Manager was on duty and thanked me for being a Platinum. He told me I was upgraded to one of their best rooms and hoped I would enjoy it. We walked in and were surprised that we had been upgraded to one of their terrace suite with a huge terrace overlooking the Grand Canal. The terrace was bigger than our first studio in NYC. It was really unbelievable.

  71. Never got one, but hoping I will get some in the future secondary to gold status with Amex plat

  72. Ed Coleman Reply

Sorry no SPG card. Have to try one someday. Usually use Choice hotels (a lot of properties, and free nights with little effort).

  73. Unfortuneately, I don’t do business with SPG, though I still have an old rewards card used only every few years. I try to stay with Hyatt Regency hotels and then Marriott — at least Hyatt is a Delta partner!

  74. Le Méridien Lav, Split Croatia
no SPG status, used points to book 4 night stay and were upgraded to top floor ocean view suite….sweet.

  75. I had a great upgrade several times at the Sheraton Fairplex by the LA fairgrounds in Ontario, California.

  76. At the Sheraton Anchorage, I was booked into a standard 2 Queen room. When I arrived, they upgraded me to a Junior Suite with a bathroom that had to be the size of my original room. It had the most stunning view, and it is a room I will forever remember.

  77. Russ hate to tell you but as a Gold I got barely anything I would consider a room upgrade. So far at Plat I have not received a single room upgrade either in SPG. Only a few stays so far this year though.

  78. Haven’t been able to score an upgrade yet, but looking forward to it!

  79. No SPG status, but I like using their points for free hotel nights. Can’t beat free!

  80. Will find out soon enough. Staying at Sheraton in Puerto Rico next weekend. Will be my first SPG stay since crossover rewards started.

  81. None yet but I have big plans for the next two years so hopefully will be able to answer differently then.

  82. There really haven’t been any other than an SPG floor that gets you free bottled water….I asked about the Diamond status from Delta crossover and they looked at me like deer in the headlights. No clue and I had to fill them in on the crossover. Odd. Have been SPG gold for years, no upgrades and none via crossover. Hmm…Would really like one!

  83. At the Sheraton Madison, I almost always get upgraded to club lounge floor. Treated very well there.

  84. Not really an upgrade, but I got bumped out of my room at the Westin Hunstville due to them painting my room and got moved into the Presidential Suite for 3 nights…

  85. WOW Suite at W Minneapolis — The Foshay. Room going for $999/night
Get upgraded as SPG Platinum 18/18 YTD for all of my stays. As long as there is a suite available for purchase according to SPG mobile app at check-in, I get it 🙂

  86. I don’t stay at Starwood’s much, but I did get a nice upgrade to a “1 bedroom plus den” room (my kids called the den “the man cave”) at the Westin Monache Resort, Mammoth Lakes, CA.

  87. Still building enough points to make that first aspirational trip as SPG Gold! (So no upgrades for me, yet.)

  88. Saturday is long over but anyway, I guess the best upgrade so far was at the Four Points LAX where I received a huge suite. It was only for one night, so we (we were two) couldn’t enjoy it for long, but it was fun.
Not really an upgrade but the best deal was a night in a Presidential Suite at the Westin Mission Hills. That night was complimentary given by American Express. After I had booked that free night in a standard room I checked my reservation online. And to my surprise I could choose different room types up to Presidential Suite without any rate change … and the rate was … free 😉
