amex spg card approved delta points blog

Talk about perfect timing. I have my stopover in Rome this fall on my way back from Sweden and need SPG points for my hotel stay. As I posted on the day the 30,000 (offer has expired – current offer here) point current SPG offer went live, I did not get an instant approval but called about 2 hours after my application and was approved and they thanked me for being a long time AMEX member. No, I thank you!

On to my next card. There are days being dyslexic makes me crazy. I put in my wife’s SSN in the app. Ugh. Really? Ugh. If it is just one number off they can fix that easy. The whole number wrong, ugh, you have to fax in a copy of your social security card to Chase along with your reference number for the application. Gosh, I felt dumb. But, I expect all will end well soon as I have never had a no from Chase. I have had to move things around, but never a no. The 50,000 point bonus for this card is now over but the British Air has one for 50,000 with NO first year fee is a good alternative!

Then we have US Bank 85,000 point Club Carlson card that I am still waiting for an answer up or down (better than the quick NO last round before reconsideration call). Ah, US Bank. Thanks to Hack my Trip perfect directions in a great post a few months back I wrote to ARS & IDA. These little companies are NO points enthusiasts friend. These people do things like track how many application you have had to your telephone number. Yuck.

ars freeze letter delta points blog

I have printed a PDF copy of basic request letter here. After sending mine in I very quickly received first the above letter, and then the below letter about a week later.

ida freeze delta points blog

Now the sweet thing about these two is freezing them has just about no impact on anything that I can see other than helping you. I recommend all readers freeze their ARS & IDA accounts. I think we may see more credit cards using these services going forward and having them not give out any info to me is just great. Could it have an impact on an approval? Maybe. But reporting you have say 10 or 20 or 40 credit card requests from your phone number will just possibly have a more negative impact on your ability to get an approval.

So I am only 1 for 3 so far but expect to get all 3 over the next week or so and either way will update the post. I am now all set for cards until November time frame. I have to decide on my second AMEX Reserve at that point if I will keep it for 2014. I am leaning toward yes but will see where my MQMs are by then. Fun to have choices and look forward to my next round of cards! – René

  1. Hi Rene – how were you able to get around the stipulation that “If you are identified as a current American Express® Cardmember, you may not be eligible for this welcome bonus offer.”?
When I went to apply it immediately identified me as having other AmEx cards, and said I was only eligible for the 10k point initial bonus, and not the additional 20k after spend.

  2. Argh I have ARS and IDA. Hate. I managed to get the business version of Club Carlson without freezing so we tried the wife’s luck for personal. No luck. Then we requested copies of reports and when we received the ARS report we also received someone else’s report. To our address. With our case number. We called and they pretended it was no big deal then asked us to shred it. Nope, it’s locked in safe. Now trying recon call but it’s not going well. All of this over 3 apps in last 24 months showing on her reports. Shame on her ;-).

  3. Hi Rene, so, a couple of questions here. Do the SPG points have to be transferred in 20,000 point increments, or is that just the ration that any transfer gives you? How hard is it to transfer to Delta? On the other cards, can you transfer those miles to Delta? Thanks!

  4. @Brent – great question. You can transfer much less. Per SPG:
Starwood Preferred Guests members may transfer up to 94,999 of their Starpoints® into their Delta Air Lines account at a 1-to-1 ratio. And for every 20,000 Starpoints transferred within the same transaction, members earn 5,000 bonus Starpoints that will be automatically added to their transfer up to a maximum of 94,999 miles per eligible transfer.

There is no minimum point transfer requirement for SPG Platinum members. SPG Gold members have a minimum point transfer of 1,500 Starpoints and SPG Preferred members have a minimum point transfer of 2,500.

Transfer maximums are based on a combination of member Starpoints and the Starwood Preferred Guest airline transfer transaction bonus. Only one airline transfer transaction per member per program per 24 hour period is allowed; multiple transfer transactions within the same 24 hour period will reject. Both the Starwood Preferred Guest and airline frequent flyer program accounts must have identical member names in order to complete this request; different names will cause the transfer to reject.
The big perk of doing 20k blocks is the 5k bonus that comes your way. It is very easy to transfer SPG (takes about a week or so) and membership rewards is just as easy and goes almost instant.

  5. With US Bank Club Carlson card, if all else fails, write a letter to the address on your denial letter and explain why you have that many inquiries and why you want a Club Carlson card. The letter finally worked for me (or at least my status via the automated phone line is now “approved”), after being denied via phone reconsideration and having ARS and IDA frozen. I will post my experience to the FT thread once I get the actual card in the mail.

  6. @JB – Scott is part of BoardingArea but also SELF hosted so it is NOT a BA issue it is one for Scott’s servers. I will tweet him about it. Txs. Rene
