RenesPoints Rookie

Welcome to a weekly feature on the Renés Points blog. Each week this series covers in a “rookie” way either a Delta or travel related theme and attempts to break down to a basic level each topic. You can read up on all the previous posts HERE. Now on to this week’s feature.

q&a

This week, I just wanted to hit on some of the most common questions that I get each week. Not only are these good items to cover but also a good post to send a link to when readers ask. I also have a “Top 10” year end Q&A that you may want to take the time to peek at, as well as a Rookie post with elite Q&A, but for now let’s get right to today’s Q&A.

Q) If I have a Delta AMEX, and pay for a ticket for my husband, sister, friend, do they get the free bag perk?
A) No. The free bag, for you and 8 more on the same itinerary, ONLY works when you are also flying on the same itinerary. You can also LINK itineraries if you happen to be on separate PNRs, but will have to show you are on the same flights. Don’t expect the perk if you are simply meeting part way along the way.

Q) I canceled my Delta AMEX 4 months ago (you pick, Gold or Platinum or Reserve – personal or business). Since it has been 90+ days I can get the new card bonus right?
A) No! When you cancel you must wait 365+ days before you can get an AMEX new card bonus.

where to find your delta amex bogof certificate at delta-com delta points blog

Q) I have had my Delta Reserve card for 6 months now and don’t see my BOGOF that is my free companion certificate. Where is it?
A) You do not get it until about 1 month after your YEAR 2 annual fee bills. So, you have about 7 months to go before you see it at your “My Delta” page in the “My Wallet” box and can spend it!

Q) I am a Delta (whatever medallion) and booked a ticket for my husband, sister, friend, do they get any of my medallion benefits when flying since I got them the ticket?
A) No. Unless you are flying with them, they get nothing. No free bags, no upgrades, nothing. The ONLY perk that DOES apply is this. If you booked an award ticket for them with your Platinum or Diamond medallion, you can cancel or change free tickets booked for others until 72 hours before flight.

Q) I have just made it to Platinum Medallion. Do I get my Choice Benefit for this year and next?
A) No. You have earned your status for 2014 and your Choice Benefit is for 2014. You are just flying as a Platinum sorta free for the rest of this year. BTW there is a Rookie post about Choice Benefits you may want to review.

mqms and rdms posting on delta-com after spend delta points blog

Q) I just completed my Delta Platinum or Reserve spend to get the bonus MQMs but I don’t see the points. Where are they?
A) Most of the time you do not get them till your statement generates. Then they will post in 1-3 days after the close. BTW, here is a tip, call and ask to have your AMEX statement close as near as possible to the 1st of the month (you can pick any day you want). I have mine close on the 2nd (for both cards). To me this makes spend and post much more simple.

Q) If I buy a ticket now, today, for travel in 2014, I will not earn MQDs right?
A) Wrong. You earn MQDs at the time you fly on the ticket not at the time you buy the ticket, so if you do not plan to be exempt via AMEX $25k spend, then there is NO risk of buying tickets now for 2014.

Q) Delta says I have 24hrs to cancel a ticket. Is this MAX 24 hours?
A) No. It is by the end of the next day. So say you book a ticket at 2AM ET, you would have until 23:59 the next day to cancel the ticket at no charge (but please don’t push it that far)!

Q) René, can you help me find a good Delta mileage run from (you pick any city). I am having a hard time finding any good deals from (you pick any city). It seems the prices are just too high and I can not find the deals you always seem to get. Can you email me some ideas?
A) Ugg. I LOVE readers e-mails but this kind I don’t care for so much. Why? The answers is a mileage run takes some planning and work. I am on one today/tomorrow and starting in Las Vegas (I live in South Bend Indiana). But where I live does not matter. I will have a post up about the run and link back here when done. But for now, please look at the Rookie post list and read post #1, 11, 18, 50 & 51. These posts will answer your question so you can build a run on your own from your home town!

Q) If I book a Delta ticket with either Barclaycard Arrival(TM) World MasterCard®, Chase Ultimate Rewards or US Bank FlexPerks do I earn MQMs and Skymiles even in coach?
A) You bet. As far as Delta is concerned you are buying a ticket. As long as it is a valid fare class you are good to go!

That wraps up this week’s rookie Q&A. Do you have more rookie questions? Do you have some other topics you want me to cover for Rookie Wednesday? Please comment on the blog or e-mail me!- René

I looked but did not see this question covered, so hopefully you may have some knowledge about upgrading from a travel agent’s group ticketing. I am a faculty member who will be traveling to Japan with students in May. The travel agent has told me that I would not be able to upgrade from the group rate. Surely, there is some way, money, miles, anything! that will help me to upgrade to business class. I’m too old to sit in the back (I’m also a Silver Medallion Member). Any thoughts or info? many thanks,
    Annette

    • @Annette – very very very doubtful. Group tickets are often even lower fare class than standard tickets. You must have a M class or higher for INT flights. Sorry.
