flyertalk alaska air poaching delta elites

With a HT to FlyerTalk it seems that Alaska is not going down without a fight. Delta has for Washington residents a HUGE MQM and RDM bonus going on but Alaska is making it even more simple – we will just match your status!

Should you do this? If you are fed up with Skymiles2015 and are already crediting your Delta flying to Alaska why not and enjoy the perks of their program along the way.

Personally I think Skymiles2015 is going to hurt Delta big time and will be looked back on as the “NEW COKE” for Delta and they will say – WHAT WERE WE THINKING? We will not see these detrimental effects until about this time next year. I can’t fathom how upsetting most low spend business flyers, ALL who spend over $6819 per ticket, and just catering to just a narrow middle subset of flyers is a good idea at all. Time will tell! – René

  1. AS has always offered this. But from what I understand, it is only up to MVP gold which is what I matched as a DL plat. The MVP 75K has to be miles flown.

I am the former DL customer that you are referring to.

I consistently make gold or plat each year with DL in about 6-8k spend. It was actually the MQD’s that made me jump ship. If I fly 80k a year and only spend $7000 doing it, I’m penalized. That is not the way to reward loyalty. It is the way to drive it away. I switched to AS on Jan 1, and when the latest announcement came out, I congratulated myself on my choice as I could have spent the first quarter of this year giving my money to DL. Instead I give it to a airline that values my business, enough so that each flight I am on, when the drink cart comes by, they say “Thank you for your business Mr. PC. Can we buy you a drink this evening?
Oh, and did I mention that there is no change fee for MVP elites except for the difference in ticket price? The three changes I have made this year has cost me nothing denied DL $600. And it feels great.

I am an AA ExPlat but don’t understand your point. If you fly 80,000 miles a year on $7,000 why would Delta value your business more than someone who flys 20,000 miles on $7,000 a year.
Loyalty is great but not at the expense of the bottom line. You can be loyal but not one of the most profitable customers.
It’s all about where you rank on the profitability scale and not the mileage scale. That’s the business whether you like it or not.

  3. So, it continues to get harder to get upgraded on Alaska. It used to be so easy. sigh
