Does spending Chase Ultimate rewards points on Delta earn MQDs? What about MQMs & RDMs?

Would you burn 18,000+ Ultimate Rewards points to prove a point? I did, and even spent a day mostly on my favorite jet that is CRJ200s! 🙁

What I said on FT about the thread

You see, as happens now and then, people put up posts on Flyertalk and think they know all the answers. Now when I don’t know I either go to Delta and get an answer or I test. Sometimes those at FT still think I am wrong, but I can rest easily knowing I have the facts right. I commented about a thread that the info was bogus and there was “nothing to see here – move along”.

my reply at FT

That drew a sharp response from FTer “timmy83 as you can see from the above. Now I knew deep down, even though I had not flow UR points myself, that Chase Ultimate Rewards would earn FULL credit with Delta including MQDs.

all points

So I went ahead, at a horrid 11CPM, and purchased a day trip to Des Moines, Iowa. Why not. I mean lots of quality time on CJR200s is what I live for.

my ticket from UR points how much

Much like when I buy a ticket with FlexPerks points, that incidentally also earn FULL credit with Delta including MQDs, shows up as purchased with a Mastercard. I was expecting to get 173MQDs for this trip.

rene ultimate rewards flight full mqds

So now I have flown it, and the points have posted, and I was off by one point as Delta rounded up the MQDs (so even 1 penny over will round up – sweet) and I ended up with 174MQDs and full Skymiles including my medallion bonus. Also, my fellow blogger MJ on Travel had a similar trip and also earned FULL points across the board so we have two data points in the same month btw.

So we have yet one more FT rumor debunked and know that if you pay with:

  •  A Capital one card (and then pay yourself back with points)

In all of these situations you will get FULL credit for your Delta trip. Will any of this change under Skymiles2015? I would not see any reason why it would.

The only possible thing that could happen, as HAS CONFIRMED happened with AMEX Travel, is that Travelocity, the booking engine they (UR & FlexPerks) uses to book Delta tickets, could start using consolidator fares. This is NOT the case now, but that could happen one day. Then the only way to be safe is use say the Barclay’s Arrival card and book directly at Delta.com to be 100% in the clear and still be able to redeem points for the trip. – René

  1. Wow. Thanks for explaining this. You are so smart on this stuff, I never thought I could earn miles while flying on miles.

This test was soooo warped on so many levels. What next – are you going to see if you can get to medallion status solely by Barbie jet mileage runs?

    • @AlohaDaveKennedy – I would never do a medallion run only on CRJ’s (well then again I sorta did didn’t I – but it was to prove a point not to earn miles).

  3. Thanks for testing this. I was pretty sure that tickets purchased with FlexPoints and Rewards were considered standard revenue tickets but never tested it out. For DL MQDs I guess the issue is being sure they get written on DL stock, which shouldn’t be a problem is all legs are on DL, but if mixed AF/KL?
But also interesting to learn that the receipt shows as charged to a CC.

  4. Well done sir!

Very glad to see this. I would like to still suggest a caveat – I had a bad experience with United and UR. I used the UR portal to buy a ticket with cash (not using points) and wound up not earning a single PQD because it was deemed to be a “bulk fare” – despite being exactly the same fare that United offered on United.com (I used the portal to earn the double miles).

Obviously this is United I’m talking about, not Delta. But as you mention above, the Amex Travel situation with Delta is a very similar deal and I would not be surprised to see “bulk fares” pop up when using different forms of purchasing.

My advice is always, always buy your ticket on Delta.com or United.com. That’s the only way to be 100% certain you’re not going to get screwed.

I’ve had the FlexPerks card since the very start (US Bank had the deal with NW, but DL had AmEx). Anyway, I’ve yet to use any of the points I’ve accumulated. Thanks for mentioning the eGiftcard trick again! I’ll make sure I remember to use it.

  6. Thinking of purchasing a ticket to Denmark this month and torn between booking directly through Delta or using the UR portal with my CSP. I see in your example above you used UR points but will I still earn full Delta credit if purcahsed with my cc? I also have a Delta Amex Gold that gives me 2X on travel but feel it would be more beneficial using UR portal/CSP for the 2X and the 7% dividend at the end of the year. Am I correct?

I want to share that I am having trouble with Delta correctly adding my MQDs. I have flights for which they are calculating an amount which is less then my fare and a recent first class tckt that I bought last minute in A class from LAS to LAX has the miles credited (including bonus class miles) but just a “-” under MQDs. I have been going back and forth through phone calls and email and am told it will be taken care of but nothing yet! Just a heads up to all to check your mileage as well as your MQDs!

  10. Can you get the complementary medallion upgrade when you use UR to book the ticket?
