Welcome to a new Sunday series that will be a bit like a fireside chat. I count it a privilege to be a part of an amazing group of Travel bloggers here at BoardingArea.com. But just how well do you know “your” BoardingArea writers? Are you reading all the blogs you should be each day? This series will help you get to know them one by one. Now on to this weeks chat.

Delta Air Lines 737-900ER photos delta points travel blog (68)

I had some issues this week getting my fellow BA bloggers who have yet to be interviewed lined up for a personal chat (we do these live one on one so timing can be hard some weeks). So this week I thought I would tell you about my background and how I started DeltaPoints.

Regular readers know my family background is Swedish. I started flying when I was an infant. I flew when there were lounges in the upstairs of a 747 and you could smoke (yuck) on a jet. One of my favorite stories my mom tells is of me at about age 4 going solo into the 1st class cabin to a get cup of ice from the flight attendants and then walking around tossing ice about the cabin – yeah I was a brat back then.

From Sweden to America our main choice was SAS when I was a wee lad. As an adult moving to northern Indiana, Northwest Air or NWA was much better as I got to enjoy a SAAB turbo prop from South Bend to Detroit and KLM was great and I loved Amsterdam airport (and I still do). Plus, with my computer business I have run for almost 20 years, I could rack up all sorts of World Perks miles via buying the computers parts I needed for the business on my NWA card. This let my wife and I fly coach once a year free on points. When NWA did cash & points I started to pay/fly coach for sleeping and World Business Class for the return on points. Just loved it.

Once I had a chance to see how nice biz class was, I wanted more. But how does blogging fit in and how did I get here with literally millions of page views in a few short years. I found Rick’s site, that is the Frugal Travel Guy, then from Rick to FlyerTalk and attended the first Chicago Seminars. My mind was officially blown! I met most of the rock starts of BA including Randy Petersen. I had for years supported Rick on his blog and he knew I was UBER into Delta and suggested me to Randy as a good choice to write about Delta for BA. I was not so sure (terrified actually and quaking in my own shoes).

Another thing you may not know about me is I am Dyslexic. Not so much so that I see things upside down and backwards but bad enough that I misspell everything and can say in my head 21 and watch my right hand put down the number 12. Beyond maddening and a struggle each day. The idea about blogging and the world yelling at me each day for typo’s – no way! But I loved all things points and particularly Delta so why not just try especially with a chance to start blogging at BA.

Since there were, and still are, very few who are PRO Delta in the blogging world, I found a following. Then something amazing happened, just a few weeks into blogging, as Skymall’s 25,000 point offer for $500 in spend came around again. You see Skymall was the main shopping portal for NWA but not so much after the merger with Delta as they had their own with another portal. So they had this promo to get rid of millions of Delta points before the end of the year. Guess who got to be the point site for the launch of the last promo – yep – it helped the blog explode right out of the gates.

Since then it has just been me being me and now 1600+ posts of original, quality, Delta focused material and me enjoying what I do. Also what has kept me going are the amazing e-mails from readers each day thanking me for the blog! You have no idea what that means to me – thank you.

So what’s next for the blog? The launch of DeltaMileageRun.com has been a blast. On any given day DeltaPoints gets some 5,000+ views. The new blog, so far, just 500 a day but not so bad for just 3 weeks old. Plus, not everyone is into mileage runs. But, until the end of 2014 there are really deals to be had; in 2015, there will still be a need for the new blog as MQMs will NOT change in 2015 as you will see when you price any ticket on Delta.com. I hope to post a MR deal at least once a day if I can (maybe not on weekends).

As to DeltaPoints, more of what you love to see each day plus maybe some more guest posts now and then from readers. Some are truly brilliant and we can all learn from you; I look forward to more of these and I think you will enjoy them too.

So that is a little about yours truly. Next week be sure to check back as I hope to bring you over the next few months most of the rest of the BA bloggers. After that, and depending on schedules, I plan to introduce a new Sunday feature – stay tuned to find out more about that soon! – René

THANKS, RENE. That was your BEST INTERVIEW yet. It was good to learn more about you. I loved your candidness. Keep up the great work.

  2. I really have enjoyed your posts. I still keep reading your posts even since my DV mishap, now I’m concentrating on getting AA Plat. status but I’m still trying to read your posts because my wife and I have GM status until next year. So we’re working on using up our 500+k FF miles. Not interested in Europe or Australia, been there enough. Looking at concentrating on the far East and South America now.
In many ways I think today’s was one of the best. I wasn’t aware of your start in blogging so it was really interesting. Good luck and keep trying to get Delta back on track. I still think if your not a DM you may as well be a kettle with Delta.

  3. Thanks so much for your blog!!

Just went to Utah last week. I chose to go out of Charlotte for the non-stop flight, and it was a great experience. On time both ways – yea! I’ve complained so much about Delta, just wanted to say something positive about them.
