rene buys VR cards in indiana 1APRIL2015

I promised from this morning’s post I would go out test buying a VR and see how it goes here in the frozen north. So far, all good. Paid with my Delta AMEX Reserve card (I am out of AMEX gift cards) and had zero issues.

I spoke with the store MGR and no news so far. It could be as my fellow blogger Gary reported that April 4th is the new date to check as the POS updates must reach all the stores.

Or, it could be like my fellow blogger Michael W. reports that it’s hit and miss regionally across the country.

It will be interesting to see this time next week if this is nationwide or if we will have areas where it is still possible and others where it is not. Gosh, who would have thought Indiana could be the new place to visit for Ice Cream? 😉 – René

  1. Just a sad data point from eastern Long Island in New York. Yesterday I ran to my CVS at 6:20 PM when I read the news here on Delta Points and was able to purchase 5K worth of beans, 10 VR cards with my Delta Reserve. That put me over the top for my first 30K mileage boost. It looks like the second 30 K is going to be much much more difficult.
I just got back from the same store and tried to buy 3K or 6 more cards and the computer said “Invalid tender type” so no more credit cards- cash only. Asst manager suggested I try another card and I considered using my Barclay’s Arrival but to spend 24 bucks to get 30 bucks of travel purchasing power is just silly.
    I’m bummed.

  2. Jeff, I’m in a similar position. Although I’m at $50k annual spend on my Reserve with a Vanilla buying blitz last night. My car still smells of vanilla. I’m sure I can hit $60k through natural spending, but I was hoping for another 10k or 20k MQMs from my Business Platinum card, now that looks like it will be very difficult to meet.

  3. Well done, Rene. I hope your store stays active a few more days!

  4. @Rene: Which specific gift cards can be loaded with a PIN and dumped into BB at Walmart?

I thought these were gone as of Monday. I will try my local store tonight!

    • @Geoff – from what I have tested, as long as it is a VISA debit, you are fine. Go home, go online, set pin, do max $500 per load at Walmart. Up to $1000 per day per BB.

  6. Thx Rene. Can I buy 2, $500 VISA debit cards at Walmart and load them onto BB right there in one stop?
Getting to and fro Wally World here is a giant PITA.

    • @Geoff @Ryan – have not tested buying right at Walmart. I buy at my local grocery store with AMEX Gift cards to lower fee to, well, a net profit. 😉

  7. Rene, can you upload a pic of the ones you buy(or link to any others)?
I’d prefer not to be stuck with a $500 VISA that only allows spend and no BB dump.
As an aside can I buy AMEX debit cards at Rite Aids or office supply stores and dump those?

  8. Both my Davis California CVS usually get shipments Tuesday night and stock Wednesday morning. By Thursday afternoon they are typically out of Vanilla or nearly so. The one that keeps them on the rack I can sometimes find someone else’s stash hidden nearby.

On Sunday, Monday, and this morning both stores had plenty. Which tells me they dumped everything they had in the warehouse into a last shipment to clear out inventory.

Store #2 the clerk informed me without asking that I wouldn’t be able to buy on CC come April 4th the software would be updated nationwide. I can’t load up on this I hit my CC limit and even if I raised it I wouldn’t have the cash to pay a $15K bill next month.

    C’est la vie!

I’m writing this from the Boston Market immediately adjacent to the nearest CVS (which still is a bus right away from me.. as I’m one if those car-less New Yorkers). Sadly, I wasn’t allowed to pay for VR with a credit card. I convinced the cashier to make an attempt, but the register didn’t allow it. I’m bummed given that I only recently learned how the whole thing worked. To make matters worse, it’s not at all easy for me to get to a Walmart. 🙁

  10. Failed in Madison WI today 🙁 Told cash only from now on! Only wish I had discovered it earlier to milk all it was worth. At least I crammed in 9k the past couple days.

  11. Success in Northern KY CVG area today however the cashier said that starting tomorrow 4/2/14 it will be cash only. 🙁

  12. Bought one this morning, but a different CVS said cash only in Vegas.

  13. I bought 5k VR March 31 went to by them yesterday and the cashier tried
To use my credit card and got the cash only! Tried at 2 more stores cash only!

  14. I tried on 4/1 at a Detroit Metro CVS and was told ‘cash only’. Today at a different CVS it worked…

  15. Just got one at a metro Detroit CVS, but the clerk proactively told me that they would go to cash only on 4/4

  16. I just got a survey from CVS regarding my last visit to my local CVS store. In answer to the question “were you satisfied with your checkout experience at the store?” I answered I was very unhappy that my purchase of Vanilla Reload cards was rejected for credit card payment and that this cash only corporate policy has caused me to take all of my drug and similar spending to another company’s stores. I am very unhappy with CVS and goodbye.
So don’t worry guys, I’m sure they will rescind this cash only for beans policy now that I’ve told them off.
