bye delta points bog

There will be NO SWAG Saturday this week; there will be no Fireside chat either this week. There will be this post and that is it. Let me explain.

This has been a unique year in the affiliate space, that is the banks supporting us bloggers with their cards. Unfortunately, without going into specifics, the regulations and requirements are becoming increasingly challenging. I get this.

I have been blogging for the better part of 3 years. American Express has been a huge supporter and partner with Delta Points and I really appreciate all they have done for me and I hope and I know they appreciate all I have brought to AMEX. However, they have decided, at the current time, that Delta Points is no longer a good partner for them. So on Monday morning Delta Points will no longer be able to offer AMEX cards including Delta AMEX cards.

What does that mean for Delta Points? Really nothing at all as far as the blog goes. I have no intention to stop blogging, to change how I blog, to cancel my Delta Reserve cards. Bottom line, I will keep doing what I do and bringing you the blog as I always do. Nothing here will change including my support of the Delta AMEX cards as I will keep using them as I always do to earn my Delta MQMs as well as my MQD exempt spending as long as AMEX and Delta let me do this!

So is that it? No. First let me from the bottom of my heart thank all those who have e-mailed me or just clicked on one of Delta Points AMEX links and have supported the blog. What else? Here is the deal. There are 5000+ who subscribe to Delta Points and some 4000+ who follow on twitter. I am not asking all 9000+ to ALL get an AMEX card today from THIS list (but wow would that shock AMEX, right)! But if you happen to need one, or were thinking of adding one before the changes on the way for 1MAY, this weekend will be more than likely the last chance you have to support Delta Points via AMEX links I am sad to say.

No matter what, come Monday, expect to see the same Delta Points blog as well as the Delta Mileage Run blog you have come to expect from me. My HUGE thanks readers for being part of the blog! – René

  1. It would be interesting to know from your perspective. What are some of the regulations and requirements that are “becoming increasingly difficult?”

  2. Do you think they’re pulling affiliate support from many other blogs too? I saw over on another blog a giant sales pitch for Amex recently, maybe that’s to get in before 5/1 as well?

I don’t get it though. I read your blog for tips on Delta. So it’s not like you’re hucking the Delta cards just for profit, I mean it’s a legitimate means to accomplish what we’re trying to do here. But oh well, sorry for your loss 🙁

Oh my. I’m really sorry to hear that. It seems to me that Amex has not been making very good decisions recently. First, no more +1 for the SkyClub on the non DL Amex Platinum Card and Reserve Cards, now this. I wonder if the 25K spend exemption for MQD on the top Amex DL cards is next. If anyone has been the #1 Amex supporter, it has been you. I’m really really sorry.

  4. Sorry to hear this Rene. If the changes are happening 1May, why is today the last day we can use your links?

    • @Joey – With the 1MAY date (that some are reporting is ALREADY in place btw) it is to be approved. So you still have time but as for ME personally my links get turned off Monday. After that, you can use public ones as they are not going away. I will still have the public links up just like I do with many other cards I do not represent.

  5. Sorry to hear, I assumed you were having problems with AMEX because your AMEX links were always a little squirrley – they didn’t always go to the right AMEX screen.

  6. Man that is a tough go Rene. There are some major major changes going on in the airline industry. Just be patient cause when the dust settles I am sure that you will be standing stronger than ever.

One thing I always wondered was the business model for your blog. I assumed you were being compensated by AMEX but often wondered how financially worthwhile it was for you. Since you will continue to blog it seems not to be a deal breaker but are you now going to have concentrate more on your other businesses for financial reasons?

Thank you for the update. Your readers are very grateful for your insights and experience!

  9. Sorry to hear this Rene. I think it’s a very short sighted decission by Amex. To put it Delta’s way it’s simply a business decision. Nice that they gave you all of 3 day’s notice. I hope that you get ton’s of Chase and Citi applications starting next week. I know there my go to cards now.

Is there anyway around stand by thru another city….
I am flying from PHL to IND thru JFK
An earlier flight going thru DTW
Delta says you must go thru JFK
    I am a Diamond …. Help

  11. Is there any evidence of GETTING the bonus now on a card that you have already had? My husband was going to get a couple of delta cards (it’s been over a year since he’s had any of them), but might not if he would not get the bonus.

  12. Is there more to the story or are other bloggers getting similar notices? Just feels unrelated to May 1, which is clear in the post but some of the readers appear to think it is related.

Amex still needs customers to feed in so that they can make $ off of transactions and interest, so second bonus or not, people like Rene are still needed to drive business to Amex.

  13. Hey Rene, Great great blog and sorry to hear about this setback. Do you think your post aboout- and I’m paraphrasing here” don’t let Delta fool you into using your Skymiles card for Delta airfare purchases” in which you advocated using another card- Barclay rewards I think.
Anyway, I very much enjoy your work.Thanks.

    • @Jeff – no as I was showing the AMEX GOLD (non-Delta) is a better card as it pays 3x for flights. Still a better card if you spend a ton on airfare. Arrival only pay 2.2x vs 3x but you can pay yourself back with Arrival.

  14. Rene, disappointing news. Please know that with all the recent changes, your knowledge and insights are more valuable than ever to your followers. Thank you for the great work!

  15. What the heck AMEX! They’ve got the Delta market cornered and know it I guess.

  16. Really? What next? I’ve always admired your loyalty to delta and Amex but it makes me wonder what else is coming if Amex doesn’t need you?

Have learned a lot from this website Appreciate all you do. I got a Delta Reserve Card through your link today. Hope you get something from this. Also making my first milage run with my husband. A nice night in Miami thanks to your milage run from Cincinnati. When you live in Cincinnati anything is a deal under $400.

  18. I think I understand what is going on. I expect changes other blogs. Big changes in the FF programs and the cards going forward as well. There were some stories about AMEX doing some different things with the card bonuses as well. Frankly speaking Delta making the lounge change for Reserve holders puzzles me. Usually with 450.00 card you can bring a guests. Now you cannot. I am Plat and this may not impact me but my business partner also has reserve. I think in general cards like reserve will be a tough sell. The new AMEX cards to a certain degree are better for most than the fee laden green, gold, or plat cards regarding the earning of membership rewards points.

I am a huge fan and supporter of Delta Points.I cant tell you how much money, heartache and grief you have save me since I started reading your blog.
I have also ordered at least 2 (if not 3) Amex card through your site.
You have my support and gratitude for your efforts on all of our behalf
    Take care Renee

  20. Just wanted to add my voice of support to the others. I can’t imagine what’s going on with Amex but, as one of the few delta loyals left, I so appreciate your tips and suggestions in navigating the skymiles program. I’m glad you’re not letting it slow you down. I’ll keep reading and supporting where I can.

  21. Your blog has been a great help in understanding how Delta’s loyalty program works. I achieved Platinum this year, and in hoping to keep it, I have applied for and been approved for the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card (10,000 MQM’s!) as a sole proprietor (no EIN required). I used your link. Thanks.

    • @Barry – you have my deepest thanks! Also txs for feedback on NO EIN needed. We still need all the data we can get like that. Txs twice!

    • @dot cahill – I agree. But I hope by end of year they will take me and other at BA back. Strange times in points land!
