Best Credit Cards

AMEX has come out with a very nice 50,000 point Delta AMEX card offer  after spend. It is open to both the personal and business Delta GOLD and Platinum cards. Should you go for either of them?

“Offer Expired”

First the offers for Gold & Platinum cards:

  • AMEX GOLD – Earn 50,000 bonus miles after you use your new Card to make $1,000 in purchases within your first 3 months and a $50 statement credit after you make a Delta purchase with your new Card within your first 3 months. Offer expires 9/8/14.
  • AMEX Platinum – Earn 15,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs) and 50,000 bonus miles after you spend $1,000 on your new Card in your first 3 months. In addition, earn a $100 statement credit after you make a Delta purchase with your new Card within your first 3 months. Offer expires 9/8/14.

 “Offer Expired”

Unfortunately AMEX changed the new card bonus on 1MAY to 1x per card holder on personal cards (Must not have had card for 365+ day with BIZ cards). So, if you got the bonus in the past you will likely see something like this when you go to apply:

“You have been identified as a current American Express Card Member. The welcome offer below may not be the same as the offer you saw advertised previously because the other offer you saw is not available to current American Express Card Members. You will not be eligible for the below offer if you have had this product within the last 12 months or any other Consumer Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card account within the last 90 days.”

What card to choose? That is up to you. Casual Delta flyers may feel GOLD is enough but the Platinum, with the MQMs as well as the BOGOF (buy one get one free) is also compelling for many. Either way it is a solid bump compared to the standard Delta AMEX offer! – Rene

  1. I was approved for the amex delta gold card 2 weeks ago with a 30k bonus. Delta rep told me that my recent approval offer could not be amended to include the 50k bonus… he told me it was all linked by “a computer” and there was nothing that he could do for me. I never had had this problem with Chase. Is this normal for Amex?

  2. @Cher – NO historically AMEX never EVER matches a better offer. Chase YES if inside 90 days does tend to do so.

  3. It doesn’t appear that the bonus changed for the business platinum card. Am I missing something?

  4. It’s galling IMO that the Reserve offer has so few MQM compared to Platinum. Thinking now to drop Reserve before renewal, wait a year then pick up next Platinum offer. I’m a leisure traveller so keep Silver/Gold is good enough for me.

  5. I had a personal Delta Platinum AMEX card that I canceled in August 2013. If I apply for another personal Delta Platinum AMEX card in September 2014 I wouldn’t get the bonus because I had the card once in my lifetime?

On the application it says: “You will not be eligible for the below offer if you have had this product within the last 12 months or any other Consumer Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card account within the last 90 days.”

In the terms and conditions it says something different: “This offer is also not available to applicants who have or have had this product.”

Which am I supposed to believe? Would an AMEX agent be able to get me a reliable answer?

  6. @Ben – you will NOT get bonus. It is 1x end of story at this point. But you can go for biz if you have not had that.

  7. I have never had the Gold Delta Card but I have the Platinum. DOes that mean I am not eligible for the Gold card bonus?

  8. Just to be clear, I already have a personal Skymiles Gold Card. Even though I’ve already gotten that welcome offer, I’m still eligible for the business card welcome offer, right?

Do you really have to have a business to get a business card? I guess that I could make the case since I’ve thought about doing part-time electronics repair.

  9. @William – sole proprietors ie doing business in your name works fine. yes if you have personal you can get biz.

  10. 15000extra miles would be great! Just shy of gold now and going for platinum for European travel next year. Free Econcomfort for me and the fam!

  11. Is combined spending between a business and personal card added together for the MQS waiver? I.E., if I spend 20k on my Delta Plat Personal card and 5k on my Delta Plat Biz card, do I receive the waiver?

Min spend to add the biz card isn’t high, but just curious if I shift 1-5k onto that card if it makes a diff.

  12. I have the Delta Amex reserve business card, but my name is listed as a second (no benefits) on my husband’s Delta Platinum personal card. Am I eligible for the bonus if I get a personal platinum card. May last personal card was the Delta Gold which I cancelled 15 months ago

  13. I currently have a Delta AMEX Platinum, but I want to downgrade to Gold due to the fee increase earlier this year. I know I won’t get any of the bonus welcome offers as is stated in their terms and conditions, but what about the waiver of the first year’s fee? Is there a waiver if you’re downgrading from Plat to Gold?

  14. Rene – i know I’m commenting on an old post, but since this is tied to this offer, figured to add here.

I have DL Amex PLat Personal for about 18 months now, and using that card to hit 25k spend for MQD exemption.

Picked up DL Amex PLat Biz in this latest for the nice sign up perks – 50k miles, 15k MQM at 1k spend/90 days, and the $100 statement credit after 1 DL purchase in 90 days.

I know if I put 1k on DL Amex Plat Biz, it will count to my MQD exemption, (I.E., 24k on Pers, 1k on Biz = exempt, right?) but would it ALSO get me the mileage boost? (10k miles and 10k MQM after 25k spend?) or is that boost PER CARD, not PER “Skymiles Number” (as the MQD exemption seems to be PER Skymiles Number, not PER CARD).

Second Q: I saw it asked in another comment area, the $100 statement credit for DL spend – any spend.. tickets, onboard, etc… wonder if you know if that would include eCerts? I do have flights planned, so could always buy a snack/drink, something, but figured its “good to know” options.

    Thanks as always!

  15. Thank you! Love your blog!
On 9.7 you sent a reminder of the DL Plat offer of 50k miles & 15kMQM after 1 k spend that was ending on 9.8. Well, thank you bc I got lucky. As a Gold Amex since ’13 – i wasn’t sure They would approve the offer, but they did and it pushed me passed PM status and working toward DM.
So thank you for the reminder of a great deal, my wife is already looking forward to her companion ticket!
Please don’t use my name for fear of AmEx finding out & taking them away…
Thanks again for all the useful information, especially for us road warriors.
