latptop battery backup

As it happens at this year’s BoardingArea Bacon conference, we did not have any power outlets at our tables (yeah, that was not so good for most of my fellow bloggers). But not such a big deal for me.

I have a few tips for you. The first, as you can clearly see in the photo above, is to get a BIG battery brick. Mine is a BEEFY 26000mAh unit. That sounds great, but how much extra time does that give me? That depends.

Next notice the tiny yellow box on my keyboard. These are the little and large  ☼ ☀  buttons. They control your screen brightness. This is one of the biggest power HOGS on your laptop. If I have the brightness all the way up I get less than 2 hours on my stock battery and then about the same again from my battery brick. If, however, I turn this as low as it will go, I can run all day long and end the day with plenty of power after 8 hours of full time use.

Some other bits. I do have an SSD or solid state hard drive (i.e. no moving parts) and that also does give me a little more time than most folks with the old mechanical style hard drive inside.

Bottom line is there are a great many things you can do to conserve power and “kill” unneeded applications from running and drawing power – but always if you can stand it – make your screen as dark as you can! – René

    • @Ben – Yes yes, I don’t want to learn a new language. Plus I really though “I” stuff used battery’s too – amazing what keeps them going? A tiny little gerbil ? 😉

  1. @Rene, I’m not sure what keeps them going, but my MacBook gets 8-10 hours easy, without adjusting any brightness levels or otherwise changing any of my usage.

  2. Echo the Mac sentiment. 8-10 hours, no problem. No external battery or hernia from carrying it needed. 3 weeks of awkwardness learning to use a Mac followed by a lifetime of satisfaction with your computers.

  3. I have a long extension cord with three outlets in the bottom of my bag for such occasions and for hotels that don’t have power where I want it.
