pizza lunch delta 1st class

If you have not been following along with my adventures this week on twitter you missed out on my latest Delta Porsche ride and the fact that I was delayed due to a mechanical issue out of LAX to MSP. And not just a small one.

You see about 20 of us boarded 1st class and then they halted boarding. The crew was great. They started service and told us we may have to hang around on the jet for while. They even started the IFE. Let me see, 1st class service and entertainment and I can still use my phone – this is my kind of delay! 🙂

Anyway, as it turns out, we had to deplane, but we could leave our stuff on the plane. We got all exited and after a bit it turns out we must take our stuff OFF the plane as they have to tow the jet to the hanger. When I re-boarded to grab my stuff I saw the left side “dashboard” (for lack of the correct word) of the jet is dissembled and leaning outwards . Ruh roh!

Now the pilot, FAs and the gate agents were really great. They gave us frequent updates. They even brought out the HOOU cart with drinks and goodies! But once the delay was going to be well over an hour I headed for the LAX XpressSpa (why not right).

Bottom line was they were all really great and did a good job of keeping us up to date and offering ideas for re-booking and how to do so since there were only so many at the gate. I just used the fly Delta APP to find what my options were then called the medallion line and saw I would have to overnight in MSP and go out in the AM. No big deal.

hotel voucher delta march15

The folks at LAX promised all would be taken care of and if we need it a hotel would be provided in MSP. And you know what, as we deplaned there were no less than FOUR reps at the desk and hotel vouchers already printed and ready to go. It seemed to me (yeah I checked a few other vouchers) like Medallions got a nicer hotel than non-medallions btw!

2x10 meal vouchers from delta march 2015

The only thing missing was food vouchers for such a long delay. But I knew from experience to go find a redcoat. I did that and she told me they can not do that anymore. I told her I KNEW she could still do so for medallions especially for Diamonds. She said well all right then and with the help of another redcoat out popped 2x$10 vouchers for me.

Lastly, since I hold the IHG Chase card, I am a Platinum IHG guest 😉 . Even on a hotel voucher I worked it out to get free breakfast for me at the hotel I stayed at. #Winning.

So what to take from this. Delta is good and true to their word and is working HARD to make things right when things go wrong. But they are also being cheap where they can so it us up to you and I to get the “rest” of what we should get during IROP situations! – René

Weird. I have platinum-elite IHG status through the credit card and haven’t received a free breakfast at Crowne Plaza hotels.

  2. René, can you please comment as to why the red coat would out right lie to your face? As a DM we’ve all been in this position before and “know the deal”.

I have more respect for the BOS red coat that took me to another gate to print them out while telling another GA, “DL doesn’t really want us to do this, but they’ve been here for almost 4 hours.”

    • @DrJohn – Yeah I know. It stinks. #KeepDescending worthy to lie that way.

Oh if only I had a video of the many times I have seen Rene “Ask” … it is a sight to behold! The sad face, the slouched shoulders like the world is on his shoulders, and even when he gives the rep “the eye” like John Belushi gave Carrie Fischer in Blues Brothers …. It comes back to what Rene has said many times – “If you do not ask you will never get it!” Not only is it amazing every time it works in life BUT as Rene says having status RULES! All while being very nice.

Before I get flamed – NO I was not encouraged nor was I paid to write this!

I agree that Delta generally has great service, which is why I continue to fly with them (and I get frequent upgrades… btw, I figured out that my upgrade percentage so far this year is less than last year due to weather issues…whenever there are weather disruptions then I don’t get upgraded 5 days in advance, but I do otherwise)! I only wish they would properly reward their customers who fly 50 roundtrips a year, and of course bring back the award chart…they forced me to book my return flight from JNB to ORD for next January on British Airways because I was scared that, later this year, once I have what should be enough Skymiles then they will be charging a lot more since we no longer know in advance how many miles are needed. Other than the hat I’m happy with Delta

  5. Rather than “dashboard”, I believe them term you were struggling for is, “instrument panel”

Kudos for pressing your case for the meal voucher! This fellow Diamond will remember your experience.
