The official word I have from the reps I have talked to is, as confusing as it sounds, for the personal Delta cards all three are considered the same “family” of cards, that is, if you have one you can not get the bonus for the others. But, for the Delta AMEX business cards, each card is it’s own so you could get and hold more than one of them AND get the bonus for each.

More interesting information. If you have a “clean” browser, that is one that you have simply cleared your CACHE (link how to do this from IU) and you pull up the current Delta AMEX personal card offer you see the screen shot above with the offer. But, if you have logged in to your current AMEX account and then click on the offer you see a page like this:

if you are logged in to amex the card landing page

So that also supports what I have been told officially by AMEX folks. But what about the reality of the situation since we only have a little over 10 days to get the current large bonus offer for new card members. Notice what reader “William” commented today on the blog:

“I am happy to report that the sign-up bonus for my Platinum card has just posted, even though I already have the Gold card.

I wonder if Amex now considers the personal Delta cards to be separate products again, or if they just made an exception for this promotion. 75% of the agents I spoke to (including a supervisor) told me that this is indeed the case. The other 25% told me the opposite (those calls went to centers in India, so I take their word with a grain of salt).

If true, this is obviously great news for anyone who was hesitant to sign up for a new card because they already have a Delta card.”

Very interesting information indeed, William. So can we then say YES you can, if you have the Delta AMEX Gold card now get the bonus for the Delta AMEX Platinum card and the other way around? I think I will simply stick to what I have been saying all along – MAYBE!

The reps may tell you yes or no, as we can see, and then you may get the points or you may not get the points. I guess my personal take is the offer is SO GOOD that it is worth trying if you need either a large chunk of SkyMiles or a large chunk of MQMs to get to your goal.

Have you gone for either offer this month and already have some kind of Delta personal card? – René

  1. This is interesting. I contacted Amex because I had cancelled my Platinum card in Feb asking if I could qualify for the perks of a Gold and they said I would “likely not get the 50,000 miles” if I applied.

This article seems to indicate I would. I’m interested in this, but only if I can get the miles… and the clock is ticking on the offer.

    • @John – As you see, the only firm word is MAYBE! At least on the personal cards. Maybe we will get MORE feedback from readers who have gone for the cards this month.

I have a slight different question: I currently have the Amex Delta Platinum card for over 1 year and I was wondering if I can apply for the Reserve and get the MQMs and other benefits that comes with it. Based on my current travel schedule I may end the year 20k miles shy of Diamond status so looking for options to get those extra MQM that I may need.

    • @Santastico – If you go for the business Delta AMEX Reserve card (and have not had it for 365+ days) then I can 100% say YES!
As to the personal Reserve, just like these others, MAYBE! Or you can try the calling for an upgrade route but even there YMMV.

  3. Santastico Reply

I don’t have a business so not sure if I would be successful in applying for a business card. Regarding the regular Reserve, I don’t want to take the chance to apply for the card and not get the MQMs.

    • @Santastico – Just as an FYI, sole proprietors can apply for AMEX business cards with their SSN number. If you say buy and sell on ebay and make NO money be sure you correctly report that and then on the other fields put in your other income. Again, just about anyone can get the business cards. You don’t have to own a corporation etc.

My question is more related to getting the Reserve (non business). Aren’t the Delta Platinum and the Delta Reserve two different products? Why would Amex deny the bonus miles if you apply for that while you have the other?

    • @Santastico – Again, please see first paragraph in the post. All 3 cards are the same “family” of cards officially that is for the personal cards NOT for the business cards where each one is unique. Clear as mud I know but that is what I have been told!

  5. Hope this works, applied/approved for the platinum. Worst case I guess I just cancel my gold card. Ill post my results if I get the 60K miles

    • @Daniel – Txs for supporting the blog and yes please report back! – Rene

  6. I currently hold the Reserve and just applied for the Platinum and understand that this is a maybe situation.Typically instantly approved but this time I received a message that my application is currently under review and will receive decision in writing in 14 days. with your experience does this typically mean that I won’t be approved?

    • @Ben – No. I would call and check the status of the application. Sometimes they just need to verify things. 800-567-1083 or 877-399-3083

  7. Delta Platinum query, Rene, please.

    1. To meet the required $2000 spend, does it make sense to purchase a Delta gift card for myself, to use on a future purchase. Will that count properly toward the purchase/spend threshold?

    2. Related question: would the purchase of the gift card (say one for $1000 or 2@ $500) also then meet the condition for spending on Delta to qualify for earning: “Additionally, earn a $100 statement credit after you make a Delta purchase with your new Card within your first 3 months.”

Thank you for bring this promotional offer to the attention of your readers!

    • @Bernard – I would buy AMEX gift cards that you can spend anywhere in the USA on anything you want. You can even get your name on them and get 1-3% cash back starting at TopCashBack! I buy them almost every month and they count (T&C says no but they do).
Or, as you point out, many buy say a Visa Debit Gift Card(s) VDGCs from Kroger or SimonsMalls (the latter lower fee per $500 card).

  8. How about the american express hilton hhonors card & the hilton surpass cards. Are these considered one product? If you have one cant get the bonus on the opther? Any help appreciated!

    • @CW – Citi cards are under City rules not AMEX rules. The rule of thumb with Citi is 1x bonus every 18 months. I have not had anyone the other banks AMEX cards are included in the 4 MAX AMEX card rule (for AMEX ONLY cards personal + business). Also since we are talking about it charge cards to not count towards the 4 card rule.

  9. @rene I have the AMEX Hilton HHonors card, recently got approved for the AMEX Hilton Surpass card (waiting for card). Will I get the 85,000 bonus points or will they consider it the same as the other AMEX hilton card I have? Im confused with your answer above.

  10. The bonus posted 48 hours after completing spend, and paying the balance off. I’m really glad that I didn’t have to fight Amex on this one, but I wish that they’d come out with a clear policy either way.

As a young person who can’t afford to waste credit inquiries, I was worried that I wouldn’t receive the bonus, despite the assurances of several Amex agents. I recorded my conversations with the agents so I could prove my case (after checking my state’s recording laws). Amex has a history of denying bonuses for little-no reason, so you can’t be too careful.

Overall, this should still be considered a YMMV situation, and anyone who is unsure whether they are eligible or not should call Amex before applying. As Rene said, a bonus this great is definitely worth taking the risk (it pushed me over the top for GM status), but depending on whether Amex has actually changed the policy or not, it may not be as big of a risk as before.

I’m glad to have played the role of Amex Guinea pig, haha. Hopefully my experience will help others make an informed decision.

    • @William – Again my thanks to you and your feedback and experience. Really helpful. The only think I would add is do not APPLY over the phone. With a clicked link (and screen shots of the offer) you have that to use to prove what you should get!

  11. Here is what I found when I chatted on AMEX’s website:
you: Hi…I have been told multiple things by different people. Simple question: I have the AMEX Gold and want to get the Platinum. Do I get the sign up bonus of 10,000 MQQMs and 60,000 miles? Some folks in my same situation have confirmed that they received this bonus even having the Gold

Jerry: If you apply for the Platinum Delta separate from your Gold Delta then you would receive the bonus if you have never had the Platinum Delta before. If you choose to upgrade I am not sure what part of the bonus you would receive. You should call Customer Service at the number on the back of your card. They will be able to do the upgrade and answer any questions about the bonus on an upgrade.

  12. some of these bonuses are amazing, but already have one of the personal cards, could cancel and get a different personal one perhaps.

  13. Already have delta reserve personnel and business cards. Applied for platinum, rep said I would recieve the bonus after spend. Had her put in the notes on my account that it was the case. Spent 2k and within a couple days posted the 60k and 10k mqm to my account. Yes!
    Good luck

  15. Rene,

I applied for the June promotion and was immediately approved for the Delta SkyMiles Platinum card. I am pretty sure it only required a $1K spend in the first 90 days to get the 60K mile bonus. I did this, however never received the bonus.

Calling today, they are telling me that there was a $2K spend required (I spent only $1938).

Naturally, I cannot now locate the offer to back up my claim. Can you help at all?

  16. After reading this whole section, I decided to apply for my Platinum Delta AMEX, having signed up for my Gold Amex only a couple months ago. I have never had the platinum card before. I’ll let you guys know how it goes!

  17. Just spoke to a Delta representative and she said the following:
If you already have a Gold card and want to get the MQMs in the Platinum or Reserve promotions, you have to open a NEW account. Which I suppose means new credit card numbers and a credit check. (I don’t know how to ensure you apply for a new account). Anything considered an Upgrade will not get the MQMs. Also, she said that after applying for the new Platinum card you MUST continue to hold your existing Gold card for at least one day until after your Platinum card is activated. If you cancel before this, they will consider it an Upgrade and no MQMs for you!
Hope this helps someone in the future. I was Upgraded and spent hours on the phone with Amex and Delta to no avail. Wish I had known this information before. The only option for me is to open a Business Platinum card to get the MQMs. Which comes with yet, another $195 annual fee. 🙁

    • @Mark L – Yes. I warn people over and over NEVER to upgrade. Get a new card THEN cancel old cards should you wish to do so. BTW you only have an hour to get the AMEX Delta business Platinum today.
