The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN

40 off spg second night promo

This deal looks great – or is it?

I earn a TON of points from new card bonus deals. The current Delta card offers are just amazing and you should be considering them before they end in a little over a week or so. I got in and have already completed my spend and should see the bonus points on my very first statement. #Winning.

I also am happy to take part in promotions where I have to do “X, Y & Z” to get a ton of bonus points when the math works out in my favor. But I hate when things go sideways and I have to spend extra time to get what was promised by a company.

But right now SPG on their Four Points, Aloft & Elements brands is having a deal that seems sweet. It is simple as the savings is upfront, that is, all I have to do is book with THIS link to get the deal when paying with an AMEX card (not just Delta ones). Well, not so fast:

only weekend-ish rates

Well this stinks.

Notice if I wanted to use this for my upcoming visit to see the PGA on my Starpoints in July I can only stay Thursday night to Sunday. Frustrating limitation? You bet. Take a look at the rest of the (lengthy) T&C of the promo:

Terms and Conditions: Offer is valid at participating Four Points by Sheraton, Aloft and Element Hotels booked between April 15, 2016 and September 5, 2016 and consumed between April 15, 2016 and September 5, 2016.Offer is valid only at participating properties. These can be found at www.starwoodhotels.com/save40. Reservations must be booked online through this offer or through a Starwood Customer Contact Center. If making a reservation through a Customer Contact Center, callers must mention promotion code P4C. For Contact Center numbers worldwide please visit: http://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/support/index.html?language=en_US. A minimum stay of two (2) consecutive eligible nights is required at hotels while the minimum night requirement will vary at resorts. Offer is for 40% off the best available unrestricted retail rate of every second eligible night. See individual hotel listings for arrival restrictions and availability. These offers are based on Starwood’s best available unrestricted retail rates.Free night awards cannot be redeemed for first night stay. A limited number of rooms may be available at these rates. Not to be combined with other offers or promotions and subject to change. Advance purchase required. American Express® Card will be charged at time of booking. Reservations cannot be changed, are pre-paid and non-refundable; if cancellation takes place, guests forfeit total room charge plus tax. Offer valid when you book and pay with any American Express® Credit or Charge Card. Offer is only valid for bookings made using promotion code P4C. For reservations not confirmed through this offer in advance, no savings will be applied upon departure. Rates are per room, per night, based on single/double occupancy and availability at time of reservation and do not include additional per room, per night charges that may be imposed or state/local taxes. Offer subject to availability. Blackout dates and other restrictions may apply and vary by property. See individual property for details. Offer not applicable to groups. Offer valid on maximum of 15 rooms per guest. Please note that hotels, car rental companies, cruise lines do not accept prepaid cards for charges authorized in advance, although prepaid cards may be used to settle the final bill. Check to make sure  prepaid cards are accepted before attempting to use your prepaid card to take advantage of offers for these merchants. Fulfillment of the offer is the sole responsibility of the participating American Express merchant. Not to be combined with other offers or promotions. Offer is not transferable. Not responsible for clerical or typographical errors. Void where prohibited by law.

Now I get that some restrictions have to be in place but when it is really so limited it can un-motivate you to take part at all. I could, however, see this as a nice deal if you are looking for say a weekend getaway before school starts in August somewhere so do look around if there are locations that can save you some money.

As for me, I still find much better value paying with points for my stays whenever possible. Being able to stay at a great many SPG hotels for 3000-4000 points a night is one of the main reasons I will be so sad to see SPG become part of Marriott soon! – René

  1. For me the best SPG deal is usually the “Pay Your Birth Year” offer where the second night you pay an amount equal to the last two digits of your birth year. The offer is located in the Offers (duh) tab on the hotel website. Unfortunately this offer is usually unavailable, but when you can book it, it is a very good deal.

  2. I am glad you did not blindly post this as a good deal as some bloggers have. You did do some homework on this upfront before posting so kudos to you.
I tried to use this for a hotel in South Africa but the rate was actually higher than the prepaid rate on the site. As you see in the T&Cs this also is a prepaid rate so there is no benefit to this rate over the prepaid. This promotional rate was actually 20% higher than the 20% discounted prepaid rate (and this is supposed to be 40% discounted for the second night?)
Hard to know what rate they are using initially to give the discount. Spoke with a supervisor who gave no insight to this.
I find almost all these type promotions to be deceiving and can usually get a better rate that is already available without the promo.

  3. @fathiss – Thanks much. I hate to just be a mouth of whatever company’s PR arm and blindly spit out what they are pushing. Now if it IS a deal, well then I am happy to shout about it 😉
