Is it worth going for 45,000 points? Yep!

I have to say this “free agent” thing is really working out for me this year after giving up my loyalty to SPG (as I don’t want to be Marriott’ed one day). Last year I would have always always always booked an SPG stay even if it was a little more expensive than other hotels. I did this because I really liked the SPG loyalty program and I rewarded them with my hotel stay dollars. However, since points matter so much to me, when you are going to devalue them it is time to move on.

The good news for me is this has meant the opportunity to take advantage of a bunch of other promotions like the spring IHG Accelerate promotion where, after some griping, they finally gave me the points promised.

Well the Q3 fall IHG Accelerate promotion is now live and once again they have sucked me in. I am qualified for 45,000 points but when you look at the fine print and what is needed I am not going to earn quite that many bonus points (each person is targeted with a different offer btw).

I can do at least 3 of these 4!

Notice the chart above? I have to do 3 of the 4 tasks and that is good as one of them I really do not like.

  • The first one for 3k is simple.
  • The next one requires 5 nights (total over the promotion). That I can do with ease and will now look for IHG rooms for my coming needs.
  • Then we have the cash-N-points stay. Don’t get me wrong, I am all for cash-N-points when it works, but for me I like to pay all cash i.e. earn on my Chase   BANK   IHG Rewards Mastercard or I like to pay all in points.
  • And, as it so happens, doing just that for one of my stays also counts as one of my tasks. One of the many reasons I so love this Chase card and as long as they don’t mess with it a card I will keep forever and happily pay the fee each year.

For doing these tasks I get points and the bonus points. They have one more offer outside the rest that is a stay for September but at this point I am all booked up at other hotels. We will see if I can squeeze this one in or not. Call this one maybe. The bottom line is I will net out either 39,000 or 44,000 bonus points for stays I need this fall anyway.

What was your IHG Accelerate offer for this fall? Are you going to do what it takes to earn the bonus points? Let me know in the comments below – René

  1. Mine was 75k and I was able to get them with two one night intercontinental stays. It worked out great for me to get 4 checked off the list and get all my points

  2. I have the same offers as you and was wondering if I could meet the requirements for all of them minus the 5 nights with just one points + cash stay in September netting 35,000 points for one night?

  3. @Chuck – That was of the things I was looking at but I think it will take two for you that was as the points + cash may not count on the others but will only for that one. Maybe.

  4. Mine is similar to yours – thanks for the heads’ up!

My wife’s is absolutely terrible. 5,000 points for the September stay, but after that it’s one “stay 3 nights get 5,000 bonus points” and a series of several more “stay 3 get 3,000 points”.

Not sure what their game plan is with that one but I’d say they clearly don’t want us to try with her promo…
