You need to see this once in your lifetime!

Have you ever been to the legendary Maho Beach? This is the place where you can have airplanes all but land on your head (well it feels that way anyway). It is truly remarkable and it is so fun to see the pilots in the cockpit as they approach and then the RUSH as the planes fly overhead and land only yards away from you.

Props are fun too!

Even a prop jet landing is exciting as they tend to bob about more and that is exciting as well. Then again, there is takeoff also!

Get ready for CARNAGE – in a good way!

You have not lived till you have seen totally crazy people getting blown into the water by jet wash. It is a moment to treasure for an AVgeek. Now all the important bits.

  • Location: SXM is the airport code at St. Maarten
  • Date: January 7-9th 2017
  • How to get there: Delta Mileage Run anyone?
  • Hotel: Contact Karen Hana General Manager Alegria Operations N.V. Beacon Hill #2, Sint Maarten T: +1 (721) 545-4000 Ext. 5530 [notice you ARE calling outside USA] or +1(877)-231-8777
  • I can not publish the rates but they are a very good discount. Ask for RenesPoints rate available 6/7/8 Jan17

I arrive Saturday the 7th of January and depart out on the 9th. And I would like to make you an offer if you would like to join us and start the year with a mileage run to get there (how I am getting there and why not START the year with a fun run?)! I am willing to help find you the craziest route I can for the lowest CPM or cost per mile for those who are wanting as many MQMs as they can get to start the year. All I ask is you please be firm in your resolve to go if you want me to buy out the time to find you a crazy route. On to lodging.

There are worse ways to spend a day – right?

You will want to check back to this post as I am working with the Alegria Hotel St. Maarten, an Ascend Hotel Collection Member right at the end of Maho Beach to get a group rate for us. It is also bookable on Choice Privileges points at 6k + cash or 20k all in per night (but check for availability before you transfer any points TO Choice Privileges). If you already have points and want to join us by all means book if you would like. Once I have either an online code or a number to call I will update the post below. If you want to stay somewhere else clearly that is an option as well.

The only sad news, as I am sure you saw recently, is that KLM has ended the 747 service to SXM. However, there still will be plenty of big and small jets landing at the airport on the 8th for us to enjoy either on the beach or at the Alegria bar.

So pack your snorkel and mask and clearly your bathing suit and bring a good camera for some great Plane Spotting fun at SXM – René

  1. I can not believe it. I have tried for the last 2 years and never have the same days open. Just last night I book my return trip from Barcelona on the 13 of January. Missed again !

Let us know if you are in Houston someday.

  2. Companionfirst class ticket won’t work, will it? I have one that expires 1/31/2017 and doesn’t look like I’m going to get to use it but would like to . . .

  3. @Chris-

No, sorry that companion certificate is only valid in the Lower 48 states (unless you happen to reside in AK or HI.)
    Regardless…domestic use only.

  4. @Craig – That can work as there are flights out Sunday night. The rate I am going to post soon is for a 2 night minimum stay but you can always just fly down Saturday and back Sunday.

  5. I’ll be flying in and out of SXM in February from SFO. I found no decent connections for the return flight to the west coast. All involved overnight layovers in an east coast airport. I ended up flying down on DL and back on AA.

  6. Noooooooooooooooooo

It’s my girlfriend birthday and I’ll be in Buenos Aires 🙁

    Enjoy it guys!

  7. What an opportunity ! With BA bloggers and delta loyalists and #av geeks
    Wonderful so many r coming
