Personal Platinum (learn more) and business Platinum Delta Amex (learn more) new cardholders receive up to $500 in statement credits on purchases made directly with Delta during with the first three months of being approved. In other words, spend $1000, get $500 credit. That’s a great deal for flights. (Or lots of onboard food and beverage. Or headsets.)

New applicants for the personal (learn more) and business version (learn more) of the Gold Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card from American Express (learn more) also receive a 50% cash back offer. That card’s statement credit is limited to $300.

These welcome bonuses are offered only through August 15.

What About Gift Cards?

Say you want to take advantage of the offer but don’t plan on making any Delta purchases within the next three months. Could you buy a Delta gift card through Delta, save it for when you want to use it — and receive credit now?

The offer’s terms specifically state, “Eligible purchases to meet the spend requirements do NOT include fees or interest charges, purchases of gift cards; or purchases of any cash equivalents.”

Now, that statement might apply to gift cards purchased elsewhere. And the verbiage is pretty much Amex’s standard for everything, so…

Maybe?

My advice — if you go the gift card route — is to purchase a small e-gift card ($25 or $50) and wait a few days to see if it credits to your account.

Readers who sign up for this deal and buy a gift card: would you please leave data points in the Comment section below as to whether or not it credits back?

No Welcome Bonus MQMs on the Platinum Cards – OFFERS EXPIRED — PLEASE SEE CURRENT OFFERS

The trade-off for the 50% cash back statement credit is no welcome bonus MQMs this time around. OFFERS EXPIRED — PLEASE SEE CURRENT OFFERS

Just a personal hunch: I wonder if this 50% promotion is sort of a trial run or litmus test. If it’s successful, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Amex applies makes this permanent and applies to the Reserve cards.

If you’d rather get MQM instead of cash back, those offers are still around — you just have to look. We’ll make it easy for you! Use our personal referral link to receive that welcome bonus.

But if MQM gathering is a priority, get the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express (or check out the business flavor if you haven’t had it yet) and spend at least $1000 worth of Delta flights for $500. You can easily score more than 5,000 MQM — especially if you buy first class or Delta One.

Delta Platinum Amex cardholders still earn 10,000 bonus MQM when spending $25,000 in a calendar year. They can earn another 10,000 bonus MQM after dropping another $25,000 in purchases. (In other words, spending $50,000 will get you 20,000 MQM.)

Both the personal Platinum (learn more) and business Platinum Delta Amex (learn more) come with an annual complimentary companion ticket (starting your second year of holding the card) valid for select coach fares).

The Platinum cards’ respective $195 annual fees are not waived.

Other Delta Amex Cards Benefits

Both cards offer the “usual suspects” of Delta Amex cards benefits:

  • Earn 2X per dollar spent on eligible purchases made directly with Delta
  • Earn 1X per dollar on other eligible purchases
  • Free first checked bag for you and up to eight others on your confirmation number/PNR.
  • 20% off purchases made onboard Delta flights (premium snacks, adult beverages, headphones)
  • Main Cabin 1 priority boarding — even if you’re flying Basic Economy.
  • No foreign transaction fees

Who’s Eligible?

Amex welcome bonuses are technically once-in-a-lifetime per card.

So if you’ve had the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card from American Express (learn more) but not the Gold flavor, then get yourself the Gold Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card from American Express. And vice versa.

Similarly, if you’ve had the Gold Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express (learn more) but yet haven’t sampled the Platinum card, consider the Platinum SkyMiles Credit Card from American ExpressAnd, again, vice versa.

And remember, you don’t need an EIN to apply for a business card.

If you’re like me and already have had them all, well, um, sorry. But you can re-apply and see if by some chance you’re eligible. Stranger things have happened.
