If you visited the blog sometime yesterday, you got a peek at our brand new look at Rene’s Points for Better Travel™!
It’s a magazine-style theme — and really emphasizes photos. It’s also mobile device friendly.
Longtime readers may need some time getting used to the new look. Heck, I’ve been checking out the demo version of the site for the past couple of months and it’s new to me, too! 🙂
We didn’t really move much around. We rearranged some of the sidebar’s advertisements. But the menus stay the same, nor did we delete any content.
We added (to the top right-hand side) links to our Facebook and Twitter pages. Make sure to follow us if you don’t already!
Most importantly — yes, René still writes for the blog. 😉
There might be some tinkering here and there or a couple of minor tweaks we make as situations present themselves. (If you find something not working, please email me.)
So, yes, this is the blog’s new look! I hope you like it!
Thanks to Amber, Denny, Randy, and all the Boarding Area crew for their help.
And special thanks to you — readers make all this possible!
— Chris

Looks much better Rene! The text and pictures will hopefully be larger as well.
@PM1: Thanks! Remember — at least on a desktop — you can press “Ctrl” and “+” on a PC and “Command” and “+” on Mac to zoom in and make everything bigger.
Good for you that you can cover yourself up with ads. I can’t read blogs that have the rolling advertisement slap in the middle of everything. I rarely go to Gary Leff’s site for that very reason. I’m proud for you that you’ve made this such a success but I’ll rarely click on . . .
@Sarah: We know you’ve been a loyal reader for several years — thank you!
Advertisements are the only way the blog is supported. The only other option, I guess, would be to switch to a Patreon-type of model — where all (or much) content would be accessible only to people paying for it through a subscription service or something like that.
Looking Good ! Guys
@Dot: Thank you!
Keep up the good work! Now if only my wife would let me take my kids on a mileage run….
Scrolling via Safari on an iPad needs some tweaks. At the top, one static headline and picture is covered up by a different headline that scrolls.
@Kevin: Thank you! I’ll check it on my iPad, too.
It looks great!
I like the new feature to “Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.”
A few comments/questions:
For a particular article, is it possible to be notified by email when a new comment is posted if I did not post a comment? Sometimes I am interested in following the comments, but I I am not motivated to comment myself.
It would be nice if I could edit a comment. Sometimes I notice a typo or error that I would like to correct.
A simple “reply to comment” feature would be nice to add a little more order to the comment, similar to what YouTube has.
It would also be great if the comments section could render a photo uploaded somewhere. The comments would be more fun, and since everything is moderated anyway, there should be little opportunity to abuse.
Thanks for keeping this blog fresh!
@Dave: Thanks for the notes! I’ll double check on these.
The photo upload is a fun idea but gets a little dicey when it comes to copyright.
I actually would pay a subscription fee to Rene’s Points because it is that good and Rene has always been very prompt with answers to questions, etc. I’ve learned a lot from Rene and have always made a point to open the email even if the headline didn’t seem relevant. I’m more than willing to give it a try but I guess I get easily distracted by too many moving parts!
@Sarah – Let me jump in here. 1st heart felt thanks for years of support and kind words. After almost 10 years here is what really matters:
If you, or anyone, ever gets a travel card use our links.
Next, read the blog on a PC or MAC with ad blocking OFF (i.e. phone or tablet does not help that much).
If not… The blog will end one day.
Best!
René
