I put up a post in the end of December with my plans for my January 2020 Delta Amex Reserve card spending goals (related: last day to apply under lower yearly fee). My thinking was that, as had been the case for years and years and years, a charge very late in the day on the 31st of December would not post as spend until the 1st or later.

Well, it did not work out as planned, sad to say.

My rather large charge late on December 31st did in fact POST as a charge date of the 31st!

Rats! 🙁

But there is good “data point” news with this experiment and learning process (we bloggers test and report to you so you can benefit).

It now seems that Amex has fixed this “bug” if you will; charges will count and post on the date you do actually charge them. What does this mean for you and me?

TODAY, JANUARY 29, 2020 is the last day you can make Delta Amex charges on cards like your Delta Amex Reserve card and earn under the old rules. That is, if you charge $30,000, you get 15,000 bonus MQMs but also 15,000 bonus SkyMiles.

The same thing goes for spending $60,000 by TODAY, JANUARY 29, 2020.

I have a few thousand to go and will be finished with my 60k spend goal today, as well as getting my $25k Delta yearly Amex spend threshold completed for a shot at more 1st class upgrades (yes, $25k is still the number for more upgrades not 250k)!

What else?

You have only a few days remaining to choose your Platinum and Diamond Delta elite Choice Benefits. If your Delta page does not show what you see above you are almost out of time. Remember to make a wise choice and to understand that it is ONLY the 2019 year Choice Benefits you need to burn now.

Lastly, and much less important, you may have a number of Delta HOOU coupons in your “My Wallet” in your “My Delta” account (you can also see them in the Fly Delta App) that are going to expire in a few short days. If you are not going to use them and are flying the next few days why not print them and give them out to someone over 21 who would enjoy one!

Happy Delta flying, everyone. – René

  1. It seems that Delta Spend bonus miles are not posting right now. I have had this issue on the Amex Reserve and Amex Business Reserve. The only miles posting are the spend miles. I met the $60,000 on both and the statements have closed already and been a few weeks. I have not had the chance to call Amex on this delay but something is clearly different in 2020 so far on posting of Bonus Spend Miles. If you hear anything please let me know. Thank you!

  2. Sam/Rene — I just called AMEX and they stated that if the spend occurs thru tomorrow that you will be both MQM and bonus miles. So you have until 1/30/20 based on what the rep told me.

  3. Just received my spend notification last night on the Reserve for $60k (funny the $60k came a few minutes before the $30k). I went in and elected to have the status boost MQMs added to my account. Both have shown up on the bars at the top. Haven’t received the 15+15k redeemable miles yet.

  4. I received emails last night for the Reserve MQM boost, but the email didn’t have a link to credit the boost to my SkyMiles account. I searched the Delta website and found a page and made my selection. My SkyMiles account says that I received Status Boost (not Miles Boost). The MQM’s have posted but the redeemable miles have not.
