A ground stop has been issued at Chicago Midway Airport (MDW) after three air traffic controllers tested positive for COVID-19.
“Earlier today, several technicians at the facility tested positive for the COVID-19 virus,” the FAA said. “The airport remains open and operations will continue at a reduced rate until the situation is resolved.”
CBS Chicago reports, “Air traffic control operations for Midway will be temporarily moved to another FAA facility. The tower at Midway also is being cleaned and disinfected.”
A Sign of Things to Come?
It’ll be interesting to watch how this situation progresses. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this scenario repeats itself multiple times during the next several months.
Ground stops happen are common (usually because of weather). But transferring traffic to another ATC facility? That probably isn’t.
