We’re taking a side trip today.

This isn’t a post about status, credit cards, flight suspensions, or hotel closures.

No quarantines, lockdowns, or social distancing.

Let’s talk about fun travel stuff — a topic we all share and love. Frankly, many of us need it right now (I sure as hell do).

Specifically: what are your travel go-to places? Are they near? Far? A restaurant? A hotel? A family property? A favorite seat on a plane? Beloved city? Tourist attraction? Something else?

Travel is Subjective

People like different places because of the memories they create — oftentimes unexpected.

That being said, one person’s “WTF?” might be another’s paradise. That’s one of the fun things about travel.

So during this period of no-travel-unless-necessary, where do you mentally visit? Where are you excited to go again?

Obligatory Coronavirus Mention

The only thing I’ll say about coronavirus is that I’m eager to revisit my travel happy places once COVID-19 is done.

Some of My Travel Happy Places

Probably like you, I have a bunch of travel destinations and waypoints I love visiting. These are the ones that immediately came to mind — and why:

Delano Las Vegas

I love Las Vegas. It’s a blast, over-the-top, has plenty of good food and drink, and the city’s energy is just plain fun.

My favorite place to stay is Delano Las Vegas: the all-suite hotel tower adjacent to Mandalay Bay. Several years ago, my wife and I booked a Mandalay Bay room through Smarter Vegas — and were upgraded to Delano.

We loved it and stay there almost every time we’re in Vegas. (Although, given the resort credit changes to Amex’s FHR and Chase’s Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection, we may explore other hotels.)

The rooms are nice — especially if you need a place to work and/or host guests during your stay. Rooms with east and south views offer great planespotting, too.

Plus, the food from Della’s Kitchen is fantastic.

Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse at London Heathrow Airport

Great food, awesome staff, fun ambiance, plenty of seating, and Virgin Redheads (not what you think) are some of the reasons I love the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse at London Heathrow Airport.

Delta Airbus A321, Row 10

My wife, daughter, and I love sitting in row 10 of Delta’s A321 planes. There’s great legroom for my wife and me. Plus, Comfort+ amenities such as free drinks and a decent snack basket are served.

Lake Cabin in Minnesota

Almost every year, we have a family meet-up at a lake house in Minnesota.

We love the fun, laid back atmosphere of Minnesota lake country (which, frankly, is most of the state). We take boat rides, stargaze, roast marshmallows, spend time with extended family, swim, and barbeque.

So much happy.

Joe’s Pizza in Greenwich Village

My wife and I first visited Joe’s Pizza during a Greenwich Village food tour (Food Tours of NYC is amazing). Joe’s is on Carmine, between Bleecker and 6th.

The pizza is so good. I personally think it’s better than Ray’s (and I know those are fighting words in New York! 🙂 ). The service is fairly fast — although it’s cash-only, so no bonus categories. But totally worth it.

Any time I’m in Manhattan, I make a pilgrimage to Joe’s.

What are YOUR Travel Happy Places?

Where are your favorite places to travel? What cities, hotels, lounges, beaches, planes, vacation homes, parks, whatever — are your go-tos that really get the endorphins going?

Tell us in the below Comments section. And, if you don’t mind, please share what makes it/them so special to you. There are no wrong answers as long as they’re serious (i.e. no “at your mom’s house!” or similar responses).

If you forget one, feel free to come back later when you remember and tell us.
