Heads-up for those who purchased gift cards through Zola — and hoped to trigger a recent Amex Offer: Zola is “silent canceling” all those orders.
Zola and American Express teamed up Monday for a seemingly great Amex Offer. Targeted cardholders received a $20 statement credit after spending at least $100 in purchases.
Gift card purchases were not explicitly prohibited.
Zola offers decent selection of gift cards such as Delta, Southwest, Disney, Uber, Petco, Home Depot and more.
My Delta Reserve Amex was targeted.
Good News – At First
I purchased a $100 Home Depot gift card. Within seconds, Amex sent me the “Way to Go…!” email that triggers when you redeem an offer.
Everything appeared good on my Amex activity, as well:
Zola sent me an initial order confirmation Monday — and nothing else. No gift card, no shipment notification, nothing.
So today I checked my order status and saw this:
I checked with a few other people and saw this thread on Slickdeals. It seems Zola is retroactively excluding gift card purchases from the Amex Offer and automatically canceling orders.
The cancellation is something you must discover on your own. Zola doesn’t appear to actively notify people that their orders are kiboshed. (Hence my earlier phrasing of “silent canceling.”)
My purchase has thus far not been refunded to my card. I anticipate receiving a $100 refund and the $20 statement credit being charged back to my card.
Am I surprised the order was canceled?
Eh, not really.
Gift cards are a great way to enjoy Amex Offers — but often excluded in the Terms and Conditions. The Zola promotion was an exceptional find at first. It’s shady that Zola didn’t state in the offer’s Ts & Cs that gift card purchases weren’t eligible. If anything, they should take it on the chin this time and learn for the future.
