A couple’s first trip is several things: exciting, slightly nerve-wracking, and a good indication of whether two people are compatible.
But two New Yorkers who met on a dating app really have a story to tell their grandkids.
Matt Robertson and Khani Le met on Hinge. According to People, the pair booked a trip to Costa Rica just after their second date. Why? Airfares were low in March because of, you know, the COVID-19 outbreak. (Call me old fashioned but some kids sure move quickly these days.)
Their return flight was canceled — and they’ve been stuck in Costa Rica ever since.
That’s right. Their five-day getaway has turned into a third date lasting more than two months.
“We were just joking about how we both needed a vacation. ‘Let’s go someplace warm. Let’s get away,’ stuff like that, but very much kidding around,” Robertson recalls. “Then it turned real because neither one of us backed down. I’m always testing people, and when she wasn’t backing down, I thought, ‘All right, I’ll keep going.’ ”
The two booked a quick trip to the country, which began with fun activities such as zip-lining and a cocktail and ceviche class. But with each passing day, they noticed their hotel was becoming increasingly empty.
“I think, day three or four, there were only eight of us left at the hotel. And then things started to change,” says Robertson. “I think it was day four when they announced the level-four travel advisory. And within that 24-hour window is where everything started to really shift because that was the time when the flights basically stopped. So our flight got canceled the next morning.”
Not surprisingly, they’re running out of money and need places to stay until they can get on a flight back to the United States. (They should have booked through Juicy Miles! Adam and company probably could’ve gotten them a flight home 😉 ).
The couple seems to be getting along just fine, though. In fact, they’ll get “Pura Vida” (“Simple Life”) tattoos before heading home.
Do you have a crazy story about your first trip with a significant other?
