If you have a specific IHG destination in mind, it might be worth purchasing points. But buying points just to buy points usually isn’t something I recommend.
Just for fun, I searched for a room at the InterContinental New York Times Square for December 18 through December 20 this year. (Because Christmastime in New York is pretty great!)
A king bed superior room is going for $299.87 or 55,000 points per night. Based on the above chart, you could save about $20 by purchasing 56,000 points for $280.
Plus, I’ve always had amenity/resort fees waived at IHG when booking with awards points — but heard other members weren’t as lucky. So YMMV.
Which Credit Card to Use?
Keep in mind the points purchases are processed by Points.com — not IHG. So you’ll only earn whatever base points your credit card awards (i.e. 1X with the IHG Rewards Club Premier Card). But if you need to stock up on IHG points and knock out a minimum spend requirement, this could prove fairly helpful.
