American Express announced a number of statement credit opportunities earlier this year. One of them was a monthly, if-used $20 statement credit for Business Platinum from American Express cardholders who use their card for eligible shipping purchases.
Not everyone makes shipping purchases directly with, say, UPS or FedEx online or at their service centers.
But if you need something from a UPS Store — shipping, packing supplies, a passport picture, notary services, mailbox renewal, whatever — the monthly shipping credit can save you a few bucks.
I tested this out because I wanted to confirm that UPS Stores weren’t some crazy exclusion from the Business Platinum from American Express‘ shipping credit benefit.
I recently paid for a mailbox renewal at a UPS Store and used my Business Platinum from American Express for the purchase.
Right as rain, I received a $20 statement credit within a few days.
Good for the Upcoming Holidays!
Many of us ship gifts during the winter holidays. But because fewer people will travel this holiday season than in years past, I think we’ll be making more shipments than usual.

So keep this in mind during the next few months. If you don’t use your shipping credit buying Forever Stamps, consider saving yourself a few bucks with purchases at your UPS Store or FedEx Office.

Final Approach
Because UPS Stores are franchised retail locations, I wasn’t sure if purchases there were eligible for the Business Platinum’s shipping credit. But it’s good to confirm they do, in fact, work.

Does the credit apply for Amex Delta Business Platinum card?
Unfortunately, no. Only the non-branded, Membership Rewards-earning Business Platinum Card.
I have three Delta Amex cards plus a non-Delta Business Platinum. If I cancel the latter, will I lose my Memership Rewards points. If so, should I get a cheap MR Amex before cancelling the Platinum?
Yes, those wonderful Membership Rewards points will disappear. But you’re on the right track with thinking about getting a different MR-earning card.
The Blue Business Plus Credit Card has no annual fee.
The American Express Green Card carries a $150 annual fee — but you can eek out some of the statement credits left in 2020, plus take advantage of the CLEAR credit, and nice welcome bonus. I like that it earns 3X on travel and dining.
Finally, I love using my American Express Gold Card. The $250 annual fee can pretty easily be recouped with the monthly Grubhub/Seamless credits and airline credit (which we hear is going away in 2022). The 4X and 3X categories are pretty great.
Chris,
Not sure if you’re already reaping the $20 monthly credit (since you found out AFTER you paid), but doing the math, maybe paying quarterly or half-year with the credit could make more sense than the full year (though my UPS Store offers 2 or 3 extra months free, depending on term purchased). And being a franchisee, that store could have also fallen under a shop small opportunity…maybe if there’s a next time?
