If you visit stores offering contactless payment (grocery stores, some restaurants, other merchants), a new Amex Offer may save you up to $10.

Targeted cardmembers who add the offer to their card receive a $2 statement credit when spending at least $5 during an eligible transaction. The offer can be used up to five times, for a total of $10 in statement credit.

The offer is valid through January 15, 2021.

I was happy to see this offer available on my American Express Gold Card. Most of the stores I actually visit — supermarkets, grocery stores, and restaurants — are 4X bonus categories with the Amex Gold. (Read why we think the Amex Gold could be a good fit for your travel card arsenal.)

My daughter loves 7-Eleven (“the candy shop!”), which has contactless pay and codes as 4X (at least, the stores that don’t sell gasoline). I’ll probably max out the offer there during the next two and a half months!

What Defines “Contactless” Payment?

I, for one, would argue that online purchases (via app, website, etc) should be considered “contactless.”

Alas, Amex doesn’t see it that way.

“Contactless” payment is defined as tapping your Card on the card reader. If you cannot use the contactless feature on your Card for the purchase for any reason your purchase will not qualify for this offer.

Also, it seems the actual, physical card must be present and used for contactless payment.

(You) may not receive the statement credit if…you choose to make a purchase using a third-party payment account or make a purchase using a mobile or digital wallet.”

So you’re tempting fate by using something like Apple Pay or Samsung Pay.

Final Approach

This isn’t necessarily a Wow!!! promotion. But given many places we actually patronize in person now have contactless payment options available, it’s a nice way to get $10 while not really going out of our way.

  1. Lol everytime I run in the gas station my youngest wants to go in and just check everything else. It cracks me up that she thinks its so great.

If their motivation is public safety, it seems odd that they wouldn’t be including Samsung Pay, Google Pay or Apple Pay as a valid method of payment. But still, if that’s what they want, I’ll do it. Actually I can’t because my cards are not contactless (which may explain why I didn’t see the offer).
