Chase just announced the first quarter 2021 categories for the Chase Freedom Flex and Chase Freedom cards’ rotating 5% cashback bonuses!
Streaming services, wholesale clubs, and cable, Internet & phone services all receive the 5X Ultimate Rewards treatment from January 1 through March 30, 2021.
Manual activation is required. Registration opens tomorrow, December 15.

Keep in mind the bonus is limited to $1,500 in combined purchases across three categories. So the maximum you can earn back is $75. But that’s certainly nice for a no-annual fee-card!
My Plan for the 5% Bonus
As I wrote last week, I already have plans for my streaming and cable, Internet & phone service purchases. I get 6% cashback on streaming service purchases made on my Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express. I already enjoy 5% back on cable, Internet & phone service spending, thanks to another Chase product: the Chase Ink Cash Credit Card.
But I’m pretty excited about the wholesale club category! This will come in very handy for purchases made online at Costco.com and BJ’s.
Cardholders of the legacy Chase Freedom — which is a Visa — can use their cards at Costco locations. No such luck for us holders of the Chase Freedom Flex — a Mastercard.
Final Approach
The rotating 5% categories are a great reason to hold the Chase Freedom Flex (or legacy Chase Freedom card). Keep in mind the card also earns 3% back on dining and drugstore purchases, as well as 5% travel purchased through Chase. Lyft purchases also receive 5% back through March 2022.
