What Are the Q1 Cashback Categories?

This quarter’s bonus cashback categories are:

  • Wholesale clubs
  • Internet, cable, & phone services
  • Select streaming services

Cardholders who register for the promotion (here’s a link) receive 5% cashback on up to $1500 in combined purchases when using their Chase Freedom Flex (or Chase Freedom card) to pay for purchases in the bonus categories.

The current promotion expires on March 31, 2021. But remember to register today if you haven’t yet already!

Is it Worth Getting the Chase Freedom Flex Card for the Bonus Categories?

Considering that the Chase Freedom Flex is a no-annual-fee card, I think it’s definitely worth a spot in your wallet.

Personally, I haven’t used this quarter’s categories. Why? With the exception of wholesale clubs, I get the same or better earnings with my Chase Ink Cash (5% on Internet, cable, & phone services) and Blue Cash Preferred from American Express (6% on select U.S. streaming services) cards.

But I maxed out the benefit when Amazon and PayPal were the bonus categories in Q3 and Q4, respectively, last year. So that earned me 15,000 Ultimate Rewards points/$150 cashback — on a no annual fee card. Not bad.

Final Approach

The Chase Freedom Flex offers useful 5% cashback categories — but they’re only beneficial if you remember to activate the promotion and use them. So if you hold the card, take a few seconds right now to register if you haven’t yet already.
