The IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card dropped a new offer today. New cardholders who apply for this promotion will receive 125,000 bonus points plus a Reward Night after spending $3,000 in purchases within three months of being approved for card membership.

The Reward Night can be redeemed at properties IHG values at 40,000 or fewer points.

Some people are understandably sour on IHG right now. First, they devalued the program (again). And now Monkey Miles writes that the company instituted a 41,000-point redemption level. You know, so it’s harder to redeem the free night certificate. That’s pretty snaky.

But if you find an IHG hotel that works for your points budget, then the card can be very beneficial.

I’ve had the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card for a few years — and it’s never really let me down. In fact, it came through for my family when we recently booked a couple of trips.

And I’ve long argued that it’s a great credit card for families — simply for the benefits.

IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card Points Earnings

Here’s how the point-earning structure breaks down for the IHG card:

  • 25X total per dollar (yes) spent during IHG stays
  • 2X at:
    • Gas stations
    • Grocery stores
    • Restaurants

The only times I ever put spending on my IHG card is during IHG stays and if an enticing Chase Offer pops up. You’re better off using a Chase Ultimate Rewards card for everyday spending — and transferring those points to your IHG Rewards Club account. For example, the no-annual-fee Chase Freedom Flex card earns 3X on dining-restaurants-food delivery. And gas stations and grocery stores usually make appearances at some point during the year as one of the card’s quarterly 5X bonus categories.

IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card Travel Benefits

IHG Platinum status, an annual anniversary night, a fourth-night-free benefit, and Global Entry or TSA Pre√ credit are some of the perks that make the card’s $89 annual fee totally worth it.

  • Fourth Night Free: use points for a four-night stay and you’ll be charged for only three
  • Anniversary Night (starting the second year of card membership) at participating IHG properties valued at 40,000 points or under
  • $100 Global Entry or TSA Pre√ application credit every four years.
  • IHG Platinum status includes perks such as:
    • Room upgrades (when available)
    • Guaranteed room availability
    • Complimentary internet
    • Priority check-in
    • Late check-out
    • Welcome amenity (usually 500 points or a free alcoholic beverage)
    • $30 In-room spa credit

Another benefit of IHG Platinum status is you can match it to several more loyalty program statuses. (I matched it to Wyndham and then Caesars Diamond.)

  • No foreign transaction fees

Final Approach

The IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card can provide great value — assuming you find hotels that are 40,000 points (or under) and/or fit your points budget. Your best bet to put everyday spending on Chase Ultimate Rewards cards and then transfer those points to IHG.

Plus, the card’s benefits carry some value and can offset the $89 annual fee.

  1. For an IHG booking: can you use the free anniversary night as part of the 4th night free booking?

    • No. It has to be three nights of point redemptions. But you could redeem the anniversary night for a one-night stay — and then do the Fourth Night Free on a separate reservation if you want to have a five-day trip. Make sense?
