At the beginning of last month I blogged about both the new 2017 Delta choice benefit choices for Diamonds as well as the loading of the new Delta digital HOOU or Have One On Us digital coupons. Digital seems so much better than paper right? Well keep in mind as I have shown you about increased chances for bumps, killing trees is always smarter when flying Delta and it turns out the same is true for your Digital HOOU coupons. Take a look: Both inside the Fly Delta APP as well as on Delta.com they warn you that if you plan to use your Digital HOOU coupon on a CRJ200 that has NO 1st class seats (or C+ seats for that matter) then you must print your coupon before you fly to be able to use it. And after all, that is one of the main places most elites will…

Delta has fully loaded the 2017 (I have already qualified) Choice Benefits (CB) and nothing has been removed (good) and one new option has been offered for Diamonds that is 2 GU plus RU certs. While it is good to have more choices, to me, the 4 global upgrades are still the best choice and highest value. I have already redeemed my 2017 Platinum CB (yes, Diamonds get BOTH each year a Platinum and Diamond choice and you don’t have to make them at the same time, that is, the PM & DM choices) and I once again selected regional upgrade certs and am using one today to have a shot at an upgrade. This year, even as a Diamond, upgrades are going to be really hard due to FCM or selling of 1st class upgrades at dirt cheap prices by Delta. Delta has also now also loaded to Delta.com…

What a huge change from last year when I think it was sometime in MAY when I, at long last, got my elite goodies from Delta. BTW before we go too much farther, Silvers, you don’t get one anymore. You can print what you need on Delta.com. And yes, I know, there are many reports of folks earning Gold or some other level toward the end of last year and they did not get new credentials yet. I have no idea why that is. But, for now, here is what I got. I got a nice letter from Sandeep Dube from SkyMiles telling me, not just once in the letter, but also in BOLD at the end that I will soon have access to digital HOOU or have one on us coupons. I both like and dislike this. I like it that they are in the app and I can…

I have to say I am not at all shocked that the vast majority of respondents had no clue about the value of printing your HOOU coupons rather than relying on the digital only ones in the Fly Delta APP. But one more good reason was brought up by a Delta FA who I follow on twitter. Notice this: So even if you do use the digital HOOU coupon, the GST that is Guest Service Tool as we as travelers know it (Skypro as they know it) does not always read correctly. The simple solution is to recommend Delta FAs to simply type in the HOOU coupon number in the Skypro unit manually and this same idea should work on CRJ200 flights as well. So, you could take digital photos of the printed or PDF printed coupons and still have them digitally in your phone but now as an image…

The above is two Diamonds and a Gold Platinum stuck back in coach. Yes, C+ but as we all know, this “upgrade” is just a coach seat with a super tiny bit more space and free drinks and on 900+ long flights sometimes a snack basket (that is less than overwhelming). We were all stuck back here because upgrades, even for Diamonds, are becoming harder and harder this year. Heck I even, weeks out, attempted to use a Regional Upgrade certificate for this flight but it never opened up EVER. This is the new reality of FCM or First Class Monetization 2016 and Delta. Elites had better get real used to coach travel or, if you like kool-aid, the “idea” that C+ is some kind of upgrade (not for me, but whatever)! This brings me to today’s talking point, that is, since Delta is fine with the fact that their…

Welcome to a weekly feature on the Renés Points blog. Each week this series covers in a “rookie” way either a Delta or travel related theme and attempts to break down to a basic level each topic. You can read up on all the previous posts HERE. Now on to this week’s feature. I do my best to not get too “code talk” on the blog but in this modern world of twitter where you try to say everything as short code as you can I tend to slip. So let me apologize now for doing this. BTW, in the Essential Tab (E15) there is a link that tells you what all these short codes mean. But on to today’s topic HOOUs! When you are a Gold, Platinum or Diamond Medallion and don’t get an upgrade, or are stuck on a CRJ100/200 with no 1st class, you will more than…

Personally I am beyond thrilled that Delta has improved the medallion program by including your +1 on the same reservation as you for upgrades (if they are at least a SkyMiles member). I can tell you as someone who normally flies over 100 segments each and every year the 2 or 3 times a year my wife joins me it will be nice to have a shot at an upgrade for both of us and it will likely be on a weekend, even more improving my shot as a Diamond. This change had to happen for Delta. From my days in SkyPanel I can share that folks from any elite level were just livid about not being able to bring their +1 into C+ as it was before (I know, not shocking news, everyone felt this way). So Delta had to make C+ upgrades work for +1s to keep mass…

Welcome to a weekly feature on the Renés Points blog. Each week this series covers in a “rookie” way either a Delta or travel related theme and attempts to break down to a basic level each topic. You can read up on all the previous posts HERE. Now on to this week’s feature. Today I wanted to knock out in one place a bunch of bits that I often get asked about and wanted a post to cover all the common ones. I am sure you, as a loyal reader, know them all but let’s see if that is the case. If you know them all – you get a gold star today! If not, you are welcome. The first one is something you really want to see, that is, if you care about getting more upgrades. We know Delta has not only continued in the coming medallion year the…

Delta got what they wanted. For now, all the “Big 3” UA, AA & DL have just about the same frequent flyer program (ok, more or less). The maybe unintended consequence of this is that what is offered to your elites now really matters if you are going to try to, in some way, differentiate yourself from the other airlines. Delta has already started doing this with CLEAR bio-metric security membership free for Diamonds and discounted for other elites. A “clear”, if you will, elite reward winner over the other airlines. We need more of this. Like what? The list I am going to suggest to Delta I think is really reasonable and possible improvements that should be considered. These are not “pie in the sky” crazy ideas but ones that I think should be added or changed. Let’s see if you, and maybe Delta (feel free to save this…

Oh dearest Delta. I spent the morning (mostly) praising you for all the good things you are doing as of late. Then you come along and put in print on Delta.com the above advice on how to use Digital HOOU coupons on jets with no wifi. Really? Seriously? I mean, I know Delta IT has it’s challenges but hoping we don’t hit a wrong button or the app does not do this when we go to bring it up after accessing the digital HOOU: Stay thirsty my friends (is what it should say at the end). 😉 Now way back in March I gave you much better advice. I suggested then, as I do now, that you simply go to Delta.com and print your HOOU. But if you don’t like having paper with you I get that. Then my all digital suggestion is simply that you take a screen shot…
