NOPE! Delta Air Lines did not win anything at the 2016 Freddie Awards. Nor did they win anything in 2015 in Atlanta. Nor in 2014 in Seattle or even in 2013 in Virginia (a four year losing streak). And the above is not a a slide from the Freddie Awards. It is a PR slide Delta put out that I have modified a bit to more accurately reflect the fact not the spin Delta has put out. Had Delta SkyMiles become something more than just “A REWARD PROGRAM”, one that, like in 2012, could win a category in the most prestigious loyalty program award voted on by users each year. First let’s knock out the silliness of the PR slide above. Delta brags about 2.2M and that it has MORE awards bookings by 14%. Well I would guess with one-way awards more folks would book more. Plus, lest we forget,…

The Freddie awards last year in Atlanta was in so many ways  monumentally depressing. For Delta to host the most prestigious frequent flyer event of the year and then to tell bloggers like Brian from TheGate that “if Delta Air Lines did win an award that they were not doing their job correctly” makes me so sad (funny how other airlines and hotels etc. want to win each year). Clearly Delta does not feel they need to reward loyalty anymore as folks will fly Delta anyway. Time will tell if they are right or not. Anyway, I will not be able to attend this year’s Freddie Awards but I doubt I will miss much Delta related. My 99.99% sure guess is that, just like last year, Delta will not even be nominated to win anything (and thus have no shot at winning awards). The only thing Delta has won in…

I have just voted for my favorite airlines, hotels and promotions as well as for brands that I appreciate and feel should win one of the most coveted and respected awards in travel the “Freddie Awards” and hope you vote as well <-LINK TO VOTE. You can read up about the Freddie’s HERE on the award site as well as a review on the blog from last year’s awards held in Atlanta at the Delta flight museum. Now before you ask, no, I did not vote for Delta Air Lines. I think very few will after what Delta has done to SkyMiles over the past few years. Also keep in mind that at the award event last year many bloggers were told by Delta people that Delta felt they would have FAILED if they won any awards. Clearly what you, the voting flyer feels is important, is not important to…

Flightglobal has announced the Loyalty@Freddie Awards schedule and as well as the date for this year’s Freddie awards. Conveniently, it is just before the FTU Vegas event so if you are planning on going you may want to come a day early (if you can get tickets for the award event that is). I am looking forward to this year’s event as much as other years. Oh I am under no illusion that Delta has any kind of chance of winning anything this year and my guess is, as in years past, they would be unhappy to win anything. In fact, look at the opening keynote talk from Karen Zachary, Managing Director, SkyMiles Global Program Management, Delta Air Lines at the event before the Freddies: Opening keynote: Revenue-based programs – a first review Implementing a revenue-based program – what has changed for Delta? Ensuring customer reactions are managed effectively through…

I had not attended the TES or Travel Executive Summit before so this was a fun chance to see just what it was all about. Up first was the new CEO of SPG Starwood Preferred Guest hotels and brands. It was an interesting interview by Gary Leff who moderated all the panelists. Adam Aron has a lifetime on loyalty program background and no matter how long he is with SPG I think it will have a positive impact on a brand I already like very much. Next up with had an AMEX rep talking about “Plenti” a new rewards program across many companies that will be launching on May 4th. I will reserve input on this new reward currency until it is up and running and we see how well we can do with it. I think the target audience will enjoy it and we, who are more just points…

Delta was an amazing host for this year’s Freddie awards – they truly were. The event, at the Delta flight museum that I reviewed HERE was just about perfect. Also, just like Delta food on-board, was VERY good. There is not anything but heaps of praise that can be bestowed on Delta for all they and the other partners did to make this one of the most memorable Freddie awards ceremonies EVER!. There was just one teeny, tiny, problem… Delta was not even nominated for any awards by voters Yep, Delta not win anything at all because they were not even nominated to win anything and that is kinda a pre-requisite before you can win. So why did this happen? It really is not that hard to see why and it is all about loyalty rewards (or the lack thereof). Let’s make it simple and look why. The end of…

I am really looking forward to the 2015 Freddie awards ceremony! After all, they are going to be in Atlanta in the amazing Delta Flight Museum attached to Delta headquarters and just across from the ATL airport! Now I have very few illusions that Delta is going to win anything at all, as voted on by flyers that is. They were barely even nominated two years ago, only won a non-voted on award last year regarding  Crossover Rewards with SPG, and I hardly think anyone flying is going to vote for Delta with the introduction and soon implementation of the Skymiles2015 program. But what will REALLY be funny is what I think will happen that night. You see Alaska and our dear Delta are not really getting along all that well (if you have not noticed). No, let me show you: Have reduced corresponding elite perks and AS matched DL…

I was not able to attend this year’s 2014 Freddie awards (I will be there in Atlanta for 2015) but as a Delta loyalist I am not all that sad I missed it as Delta had no chance to win anything this year. Last year when I was in attendance it was embarrassing. Delta was barely even nominated to win in any category. It is hard to win when you are never on the board. 🙁 You have to go all the way back to 2012 for Delta to show up on the winners page as well as the Delta CO-Branded AMEX card. So why is Delta doing so badly year after year and, unless things change BIG TIME, will embarrass themselves in their home town for 2015? The answer is simple and I see it every single day on the blog from readers: TRUST Or I should say lack…

When you go over to the KLM media site, you will see the proud display above of their near sweep of the 2013 best of the best for Europe and Africa Frequent Flyers awards – the coveted Freddie’s that I had the privilege of attending in May. Thursday night was a ton of fun! MJ (on Travel) & I mixed it up with the “who’s who” of the travel industry after lunch with Greg (Frequent Miler) who I picked up just after landing in IAD. I thought I would start with the trip info as that is really more relevant that the rest. I booked last minute as after my return from Sweden I really did not think I would have time to go. Then, with a personal invite from Randy Petersen, and juggling some jobs, I jumped on board. Time to make travel arrangements. I first looked as just booking a ticket, but this close to departure the prices for a seat were, shall we say, INSANE and I was not about to pay that kind of price. I did want to fly out of South Bend (SBN) as my time was limited and did not…

Yours truly and a bunch of the BoardingArea crew will be at the Freddie Awards tomorrow night! I will be tweeting all about it and I hope you can follow me on TWITTER and enjoy the festivities (not on twitter yet – find out how HERE)! I will NOT be staying around for FTU over the weekend but will have some time near IAD airport in the morning Friday. Blog reader Jane suggested breakfast before I fly out & that sounds like fun! So, we are going to Joe’s Cafe at 9:AM Friday the 26th located HERE. If anyone is game to join us please comment if you can make it so we can start to plan for just how many will be there! – René ▲Delta▲ SkyMiles® Credit Card RESERVE/PLATINUM/GOLD from American Express® Click here for more information
