I was really, really looking forward to this return trip to the PGA Championship after last year’s visit on SPG points to Whistling Straights. On Thursday, day one of the tournament, that cost just 10,000 points but this year we had tickets for Friday for 15,000 points (each day will run you 5k more to go). (OFFER EXPIRED) NOTE: STARWOOD PREFERRED GUEST CREDIT CARD FROM AMERICAN EXPRESS NO LONGER AVAILABLE Still, no matter what day you go the value is impressive as the redemption is for two people to attend and if you are a golf or other sports fan using Starpoints in this way for “Moments” can be a reason alone to hold these cards. But more on that in a bit. First I had to get to New Jersey and more especially EWR. I used bump vouchers to fly Delta and overnight on Marriott points.  After that it…

Man, I had a blast last year at Whistling Straights. SPG did a bang up job for us for just 10,000 SPG points. The day was just about perfect, the course was amazing and the play was stunning. Oh and the hospitably tent was most impressive with free drinks (including adult beverages) as well as breakfast, snacks and then lunch/dinner. All was included for the meager cost of 10k SPG points. Impressive and one of the best redemptions I have ever had for my points. NOTE: STARWOOD PREFERRED GUEST CREDIT CARD FROM AMERICAN EXPRESS NO LONGER AVAILABLE Well I can tell you I am going back this year with a visit to EWR. My friend and I have successfully redeemed 15,000 SPG points for a full day of course access (for us both) as well as once again access to an air conditioned SPG suite with all the goodies included.…

As the Samsung PGA app says, as well as all the other advertising, “This is Major”, that is, the last major PGA tournament of the year and a “major” score for me who is a big golf fan. If you are a golf fan, you will drool over today’s post – if you are not – well come back later today for more aviation related posts. 🙂 As I talked about on the live day post last week, this suite (one of 20), cost almost $100,000 for SPG to rent for the tournament. So, the Sarazen suites pulled in a cool 2 million or so bucks. Was it worth it? Many other big names had also rented suites AMEX, CBS and National Car rental (ps, thanks for the SWAG National – much appreciated). There are days you just dream about, and then there is today! I will be on “cloud 9” all day. Well to be more specific I will be in a suite on the 16th green at the PGA today at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin. How did I get this? Thanks to just 10,000 SPG points! Yep, my good friend and I are not just going to the even free of charge thanks for my SPG points, but doing so in style. I received via Fedex the above folder. Inside was: Our two passes to the Sarazen suite at the course, parking pass and information about the event. To say I was excited to see this does not even begin to describe it. Now for anyone who loves Golf, you get what this package means. If you don’t, well just look at the real value for my SPG points: Yep,…

We points “junkies” are somewhat different compared to most people. When I say ORD you know I am talking about Chicago. We all have in our heads what a point is worth in Delta’s program or in say the AMEX Membership Rewards program. We all think about redeeming points for their best value in quantity of airline seats or quality of seats. If going for a hotel we want the biggest room for the least points. That’s value for our, ah hem, “hard earned” points! Well here is a redemption I bet most of you have never ever seen or looked at. It is the SPG “Experiences” page. Most of us bloggers love the SPG personal and business card points due to the fact that if you send say 20,000 points to Delta you end up with 25,000. Redemption for rooms is very nice also. But points are for…

There have been some interesting developments over the past few months so I thought I would share some of them you may or may not have seen but could impact your DELTA travel. Will bag fees go away?  and  Fee Ban Would Drag Delta Lower Be ready to pay to sit anywhere on a Delta plane The reason never to put any animal on any airline in cargo GPS vs WiFi. We are all waiting for GPS to end the 50 year old way of radio flying Has the new TARMAC rule worked? I was stuck 3.5 hrs on a DL flight this year on the TARMAC and no feds and just $100 compensation! In the summer it storms. In the fall it’s fog and wind. In the winter it is snow. In the spring it rains. Lions and Tigers and bears Oh my! Why fly! We all know things will go wrong when we fly so what can we expect our beloved DELTA to do for us. The stock answer is if it is weather – nothing, nada, zip & zilch. But this is not really true. So here are some tips for weather and more: 1) If you are stuck overnight and DELTA will not provide a room, ask them to call and book the room for you under the DELTA rate or under the “distressed traveler” rate and then you pay a much lower rate for the room, sometimes even the DELTA rate! 2) Or let’s say you give up your seat for compensation and take a bump on the last…
