I really thought about having this post as a Rookie Wednesday post but it is so important (and some don’t read “rookie” posts) that I wanted it to stand on it’s own and become part of the “Travel Essentials” tab here on the blog. Do you notice a tiny little problem with the info from “My Delta” and my reservations above. Do you see what time I land and what time my next flight departs? And lastly notice the wording where the arrow points? Yeah, if not so sad it would be funny. And here is the really frustrating part: I got no notice from Delta! Delta really seems to be working on improving some IT issues. For example, they recently did a massive upgrade to the Fly Delta App that should, if things are working right, push gate and seat updates to you unlike before that had bits set…

This week again we are talking about Regional Upgrade certs and if it is wise to use them or pull them as you approach the “upgrade window” for Delta. Should you do this? Take a listen: Also below we have links that were talked about in this week’s PodCast! Link to last week’s Podcast about Regional Upgrades – HERE Link to Twitter poll on Regional Upgrades – HERE Link to the “Ask Rene” tab – HERE Link to e-mail Rene tab – HERE More on upgrades link – HERE Hope you enjoyed this week’s episode and hope you have a great weekend! – René

Welcome to a first ever attempt at a PodCast. This may not work as it should but I wanted to test the waters with today’s post. So take a listen and see what you think: Click the “play” button to enjoy today’s RenésPoints PodCast! I have also included a few shots that expand on what I am talking about in the narrative. I have to tell you I am all about my upgrades and will use the Delta system and perks (and tech) to make sure you and I are the ones who attain each and every upgrade we can (without doing the shameful act of paying for it – no matter what the price). Again, please comment below if you enjoyed today’s audio post and you would like to see more of these on Sunday posts now and then! – René

If you are a mountain climber you need to trust your gear. You need to trust that what is stated on all the different components are rated correctly and when it really matters they will perform as promised. Now a Delta “Regional Upgrade (RU)” certificate clearly is not as important as climbing gear that can mean your life or death. But, I like the comparison because there is a ton of “trust” involved with both and we just have to hope they perform as expected. With RU certs, so much can go wrong you may not know about and I have first hand knowledge to share. First off there is just so much we have to just “trust” when it comes to upgrades from Delta. We all “know”, from much questioning and evidence, what impacts your shot at a complimentary upgrade with Delta. We all “hope” those rules are followed.…

Welcome to a weekly feature on the Renés Points blog. Each week this series covers in a “rookie” way either a Delta or travel related theme and attempts to break down to a basic level each topic. You can read up on all the previous posts HERE. Now on to this week’s feature. Next week I will be taking my last Delta Elite Mileage run of the year. I will be joined by a few other points enthusiasts who also like the idea of gaining a few more MQMs before the year is over. But all of us are Delta Diamonds so it will be “fun” to see how many of us will be flying in the pointy end of the jet(s). As I have said many times before, mileage running is much better in 1st class. I very carefully use all the “tools” at my disposal to do all…

If you are a Platinum or Diamond Medallion flyer it is very likely that for one of your Medallion Choice Benefits you have selected Regional Upgrade certificates as one of your choices (I always do). Why? Well in case you have not noticed: Upgrades are harder to get due to FCM JFK-LAX/SFO upgrade requires one You can use them with a friend You can move to the front of the line And even a few more good reasons. But my point is that if you want to try to assure yourself a ride in the pointy end of the jet then Regional Upgrade certificates (RU) can be a great help to accomplish that goal. Last month in a Rookie Wednesday post I showed the different ways you will know if your RU has cleared, that is, via an e-mail or a call from Delta. But that is how it is…

Welcome to a weekly feature on the Renés Points blog. Each week this series covers in a “rookie” way either a Delta or travel related theme and attempts to break down to a basic level each topic. You can read up on all the previous posts HERE. Now on to this week’s feature. Having a “rookie” post for Platinum and Diamond Medallions sounds a little strange, at first glance, but I get e-mails all the time from those who were Gold Medallions for years and just became Platinum for the first time ever and have questions. Plus, it seems, the rest of the “gang” does not always know what is going on or the best ways to use the amazing tools for Delta. So let’s hit on some of the high points about these certs that you can select as one of your Choice Benefits. For me, as a Diamond,…

Welcome to a weekly feature on the Renés Points blog. Each week this series covers in a “rookie” way either a Delta or travel related theme and attempts to break down to a basic level each topic. You can read up on all the previous posts HERE. Now on to this week’s feature. Many Delta Diamonds and Platinums will have received a very special gift from Delta in the form of a Regional Upgrade (RU) certificate (I wonder if any Delta 360s got Global Upgrade certs – hint hint). As a heads up, since the issue date was the 29th you have one year to use your certificate. This really is a telling move by Delta as the vast majority of Delta Points readers have seen their upgrade percentages, largely due to FCM, dramatically fall this year. If you are not a Platinum or a Diamond, you may have received…

Bumpertunites, weather and your Delta options (and what NOT to do) – Part 1 Airport Express SFO stood me up (a service to avoid) & UBER saves the day – Part 2 Delta Air Lines DeltaONE 757 seats and service SFO to NYC (and back) review – Part 3 The Radisson Blu Fisherman’s Wharf San Francisco review – Part 4 Delta Same day change, regional upgrade certificates and open space – Part 5 Are Delta Mileage Runs still worth it anymore? (a hard look at the numbers) – Part 6 Delta has really run the gambit on the SDC  (same day change) rules and this is one that I really don’t get why they decided to push. Oh, sure, I get why from a dollars and cents side, that is, those who must change to get to a meeting will fork over the fee if they must so it is…

It is highly unlikely that this would happen to you, and this is why I am sure this bug happened to me (plus regional upgrade (RU) certs are still rather new-ish at Delta). First some quick facts to be aware of about these certs. As you can see by the T&C you CAN transfer or assign this cert to someone else traveling with you. It says on the same reservation, but we also know in practice if this someone is on the EXACT SAME flights and you have “linked” your reservations then they can also assign the cert to them as well. And, if you have the latter situation, this is where the bug can occur. If, for whatever reason the flight is canceled and Delta has to re-deposit the cert back into your account, the one that was used on the linked reservation will end up going back into…
