I hate bad news. You have NO IDEA how happy I was to find out South Bend was going to get once a day service with a Delta bird with 1st class seats. Then again maybe you do since I spent 50,000 SkyMiles to fly the inaugural flight on a CRJ700 and then later ended up on the inaugural CRJ900 as well. During my research for this morning’s post about mixed cabin award booking I found an issue and it is a tragic one for those of us who fly in and out of SBN (now I know how some MYR flyers are feeling with the loss of some 717 service). You see I was looking for one-way business class flights from SBN to DTW, that is, South Bend to Detroit, and look what I found (see the screen shot above). CHILLS went through my very sleepy jet lagged body…

It’s here. 50,000 SkyMiles burned to fly FIRST class from South Bend International (SBN). Those are words I have LONGED to hear for decades of travel from my home town airport and today is the day it begins as a regularly scheduled flight. You can follow along on Twitter and see each step along the way HERE! Now I do think it is funny that Delta has chosen to put a CRJ700 on the shortest of the routes they fly from SBN. After all, despite the scheduled 1 hr & 5 min flight it is not much more than 30 minutes in the air – maybe why it is 100% on time 😉 . I hope the MUCH longer SBN to Atlanta and the SBN to Minneapolis routes soon get CRJ700 services as well since these routes are not much fun on a CRJ200! Anyway, I hope there is cake…

As I blogged about before, I have booked in 1st class a historic flight from South Bend International Airport or SBN as it is known in airport code. I have been flying from SBN for decades. I have flown lots of turbo prop planes like the Northwest SAAB’s, Delta ATR’s and so many CRJ200’s that I am sad to say I bet half of my million miler status (almost there) will be earned on these tiny planes. But now things have changed (well are changing anyway). We now have 1x a day in and out a jet that has 1st class seats serviced by one of the many Delta connection carriers, in this case ExpressJet! I don’t really care what feeder it is just the fact that for the first time EVER, as a scheduled route, I will be sitting in 1st class on a Delta “painted” jet from SBN…

I hate to start the weekend on a down note and yes I get these kinds of improvements to our local regional airport to change it over to an “international” airport will be good for our local economy – yada yada yada! How about taking just a little bit of that Pot-O-Irish-Gold (per this WNDU report) and try to talk Delta into bringing something other than barbie 50 seat jets to my beloved SBN airport. I know this is just a personal rant and really does not affect most readers; heck I know some readers are seeing my words and gloating and they cannot wait to tweet me that their home town airport now has 717 or CRJ900 service (grrr – yes you know who you are). But then again it a Friday PM post so I get to vent just a little bit today 😉 Who knows, maybe…

So this news is BREAKING for me, and the few readers who are in the South Bend area, but how many times does your home town airport change from a regional airport to an international one? WNDU.com reported today in part: “It was announced today that the South Bend Regional Airport is becoming the South Bend International Airport. South Bend is said to be just the second airport in Indiana (along with Indianapolis) that has federal permission to handle international flights of both the private and commercial variety.” Now SBN is no where near as big as IND nor are we talking a bunch of flights. Plus, it is important for Delta flyers to keep in mind that our airline ONLY flies CRJ100/200 – 50 seat junkers into and out of SBN still. I doubt we are going to see any international routes ever from Delta out of SBN. It…

As expected, the weather is going to get real bad real fast in the Midwest (gosh I am happy to be home and not flying)! Even my own home airport of SBN is set to first get ICE in the AM and then up to 8″+ tomorrow! Better to be home safe than stuck in an airport and Delta will let you change for free (I would guess you can even pick an airport close by that is clear of the weather – ymmv situation – never hurts to ask). – René ▲Delta▲ SkyMiles® Credit Card RESERVE/PLATINUM/GOLD from American Express® Click here for more information

There are days I wish I was at the airport & today was one of those days. A charter Delta jet took the soon to be “National Champs” of Notre Dame from SBN South Bend, my home town airport, to FLL airport today. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHUZZR9_77k At least you all get to enjoy a clip from WNDU our local news station of the event and look forward to the game on Monday when ND wins and wins big! Anyone going to the game? – René ▲Delta▲ SkyMiles® Credit Card RESERVE/PLATINUM/GOLD from American Express® Click here for more information

I love where I live. I really do! I mean just look how close I am to SBN, FWA, AZO, GRR, MDW, ORD, DTW, IND & TOL! There are few places that you can have so many choices to look for low level seats and all of them are served by our beloved DELTA Air Lines either directly or by regional service. Summers are nice and winters are most of the time cold, clear blue sky days with nice amounts of snow. The cost of living is low and I have the great state of Michigan a stone’s throw away with bar none some of the best GOLF on anywhere in the world. If you can make the trip, say if you are coming to see a ND football game, or for now the college football hall of fame, or making a day trip away from Chicago, and are going…
