As I blogged about a few weeks ago, changes are happening in the Skyclubs and this is a good thing. Once Delta dumped free beer, well other than SkunkyBeer, it marked a slow and steady decline in quality of offerings in the clubs and then on 1MAY14 the ridiculous $29 upcharge to bring a guest into the clubs even if you had the high end Delta AMEX Reserve card or the non-Delta AMEX Platinum card. Even Diamonds now no longer can guest folks in, including their families. So what has changed? The fees are the same but at least things, from a product standpoint, are getting much better. The VERY cheap house wines are being upgrade from a basic Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to a number of choices. Take a look: A complimentary Malbec and Pinot Noir are HUGE upgrades in flavor choices. The price point for the bottles is…

As  SkunkyGate  grows and frustration builds over bad beer and undrinkable “s-well drinks” ($6.99 per gallon when not watered down, I think) it is time to review what you readers think “Bob” should do. I really appreciate all your input and the diversity of the answers was great. Now I get this whole “stink up” about SkunkyGate is all about #firstworldproblems. I mean, really, a bunch of people griping over the quality of a free drink in a PVT club is so gosh! to begin with, but then again, it is what we do – right? 😉 Back on track. So here is one of my favorite comments about why we, and Bob, should just get over this from jene: @Bob, I could write something very snarky, but I will try not to. I understand your frustration at the drink changes, but seriously, if this is all it takes to…

The above is a twitter interaction with me and reader “BF” about the expanding policy of Delta offering for you to buy “premium” drinks in the clubs with your SkyMiles at 1 cent each in value, that is, if you have say splurged for a $48 dollar bottle of Champagne, as recommend you do by the Delta management in the latest quarterly conference call, you would then spend 4,800 SkyMiles for this bubbly wine. Well, gosh, that seems like a good deal right? I mean, I really value a $50 bill in my wallet! But 4,800 SkyMiles, uh, what are those worth when it is so hard to find a Delta award ticket nowadays (let alone the hidden award charts for crying out loud). But when you stop and do the math, that is, Delta is CLEARLY telling us that we should understand that a SkyMile is just worth a…

If you happen visit the Delta E, or F, Sky Clubs you find the improved food choices over the standard Sky Clubs snack choices. Additionally, sometimes, you will see “hot”-ish BBQ chicken as well as cold chicken salad on the buffet. You will also notice bread, cheese and a number of other goodies for you to enjoy. So the parts you need are the things you see above to “assemble” lunch at the ATL Sky Club. In other words you will have to gather together: 1 plate of bread (2) 1 plate of BBQ chicken (mine was cold in warmer) 1 plate of cold-ish chicken salad 2 “fake” cheddar cheese (it’s real-ish) 1 plate salad with dried raisins 1 set tools to make a sandwich (plastic utensils) 1 glass house Malbec wine (or non #SkunkyGate beer) Then, with the above ingredients, you can begin to make what really is a…

The first three days of this past week I spent on my last mileage run of the year. I was joined by five other Diamonds who also wanted to have a “fun run” and add to their MQM balance. I thought I would share some of the interesting tid-bits I picked up along the way. Now if you want a blow by blow of the run, just pop over to John from LaptopTravel’s blog for his view on the run (btw, John has now joined the blog to help us find sweet Elite Mileage Runs and maybe pop up a guest post now and then). First some data points. One of my flights was very oversold (love that) and I can confirm what has been reported on twitter that right now, with Delta, $1000 is the MAX bump voucher they can give out (it was previously $1300). However, know they…

I suggested at the end of last May’s Newsletter that June would just maybe be a bit more quiet as Delta may not have time to break too much more in SkyMiles land, but they did find time to destroy one more tool in our quest to find LEVEL 1 seats (in May, but we did not find out till June). Notably the Sky Clubs improved big time this month (about time). Let’s take a look at what you may have missed from June in Delta land: ➥ Have small Delta vouchers to burn? Think two one-ways vs. one round trip ticket? ➥ NEVER book RT Delta award tickets departing outside USA – how to lower the fees. ➥ Some big changes coming to Delta Points – the “Mileage Run” blog! ➥ $30 Lyft referral promotion returns for new users. Worth it or expire too quick? ➥ I just gave…

I promise to get to my review of my last round trip to Sweden posted soon (including Virgin Atlantic upper class) but for now I wanted to at least give you my thoughts on the new DeltaONE seat pre-flight dining option at the “F” Sky Club in Atlanta. When you are flying DeltaONE a.k.a. business class or the old business elite seats you are, when you check in at the Sky Club, handed one of these menus you see above with your name and are told to put them BLACK side up when you are ready to order. Sounds great. However, in practice I had a number of Sky Club out sourced people again and again ask me if I was ready to order. Nice, I guess, but not what I was told by the Delta people would happen. More training is clearly needed. The choices were simple either the…

Two weeks ago today, as you read this, I was sitting at the airport in South Bend Indiana (SBN) waiting to see if my snowy jet would take off. But as I tell the tale let me give you some background of how I got this far along the way. My wife had a good amount of Skymiles but since she is only Gold I did not want to book until I found LEVEL 1, that is, 25,000 points per person round trip. So, I booked award seats at the higher level under my account knowing I could cancel and re-deposit (Platinum & Diamond’s can do this free) all I wanted and keep waiting for and searching for LEVEL 1 to pop up and then book with her points. Free travel, mostly from my Delta AMEX card,  is good other than a few bucks tax (I do value my points,…

So many of us are looking forward to the amazing rewards Skymiles2015 will bring us in just a few days (what am I saying – other than a few who need medical attention – NO ONE is looking forward to what 1JAN2015 will bring to us)! Having depressed all but 2% of you who are smiling, there are a few reminders I hope you are well aware of at this point. If not, here is the “to do” list for you before the clock strikes midnight on the 31st next week. The first is RTW or Round The World Delta Skymiles award tickets that are soon to be “enhanced” away a.k.a. will be gone! The RTW desk has been an amazing asset to Delta flyers and seeing it go away, for more than just RTW tickets, is a devastating loss. You see, at events like the Chicago Seminars, I have…

On my last trip through Detroit I had some extra time and wanted to try out a new dinner spot. There really are a bunch of choices at DTW to grab a bite. I was in a Mexican mood and there are a few choices for that now as well. One of them is Jose Cuervo Tequileria conveniently located at one end of the A gates where the train stops. And I mean who does not like Jose Cuervo right? So let’s see what is on the menu. Not an amazing amount of choices but some good ones. Lisa & I split a set of taco’s and the nachos. Both were good but not out of this world. Service was quick and good as well. I would, for the money, order the nachos over the tacos if I decide to go back. Overall on a 1-10 I would give…

After over a month away from a jet it was fun to get back in the air. Mileage runs are just fun; you don’t really have to go anywhere and wherever you end up is just as good as the next. Sure you have to go somewhere, but that is really about it. Just enjoy the ride and the adventure. Plus, there is always something new to learn on each trip. This was sure the case with this positioning run. An early morning drive to South Bend, soon to be International, (SBN) airport and a somewhat longish CRJ200 ride up to Minneapolis (MSP). I long for the day when a CRJ700 or better graces the gates of my home bit of tarmac. I will say this, the Skywest crew was great. The pilots feathered the smoothest landing I have ever had in a CRJ200. But enough about Barbie jets.…

I just realized that my last monthly recap of the latest Delta & aviation news headlines was back in February (I feel like such a slacker)! So how about we catch up real quick on some of the latest news that has been going on in Delta-land. Also, I will be out this morning buying some Vanilla Reloads at a few of my local CVSs and will report back how it goes. Now to the news: April’s SKY Magazine is out. They have taken away the “Download” option a month after offering it 🙁 but you can at least read it online. KLM talks about a permanent airline luggage tag? Interesting idea. Really drunk Ukrainian could spend 5 years in jail after disrupting a Delta flight! This after the drunk groom gets a holiday without his new wife in Grand Cayman. Less SkunkyGate! Yes! Sweetwater on more Delta flights. Alaska…

I love flying. I love travel. I do not always love those who travel around me. This post was motivated by a total jerk of a seat mate Zach from DTW to SBN. Let me set the stage for you. Lisa & I were flying all carry-on. My laptop bag fits, even on a CRJ200 in the overhead. My carry-on, that is Delta Size Check AOK does fit under the seat on a CJR-200 but takes a little bit of the leg room of both seats. However, we all know that plane side checking anything can greatly shorten it’s life. Anyway, Zach sits down next to me and says: Zach – Your bag is encroaching my space. Rene – I am sorry it will not fit above. Zach – Check it. Rene – You know how bad they beat up plane side checked bags. Zach – That does not matter.…
