Two weeks ago today, as you read this, I was sitting at the airport in South Bend Indiana (SBN) waiting to see if my snowy jet would take off. But as I tell the tale let me give you some background of how I got this far along the way. My wife had a good amount of Skymiles but since she is only Gold I did not want to book until I found LEVEL 1, that is, 25,000 points per person round trip. So, I booked award seats at the higher level under my account knowing I could cancel and re-deposit (Platinum & Diamond’s can do this free) all I wanted and keep waiting for and searching for LEVEL 1 to pop up and then book with her points. Free travel, mostly from my Delta AMEX card,  is good other than a few bucks tax (I do value my points,…

I am not too far away now from my annual visit out to the “Greatest Snow on Earth” that is, the Wasatch front of Utah. I just love visiting this great state. Folks are so nice, the micro brews are everywhere and oh the skiing is just the best. Over the past 20 years I can only think of one year I did not go. The Salt Lake City International Airport Terminal Redevelopment Program has updated just what is on the way including some artists’ renderings of what is in store. While more expensive than renting off site, many times it is just so convenient to get and drop your car right at the airport I have to say. That space is being really upgraded. They tell us: “This photo captures the complex construction of new rental car facilities near the existing parking garage. The large cranes are used to…

No SLC folks I did not forget you and if you have an issue of driving the 3ish hours in the snow to Vernal, well, see THIS post about ATL folks having to drive to Augusta 😉 ! But this one really is not all that bad when you break it down. You are mostly on a “B” fare so you get bonus points and you have a much better upgrade shot at that high coach fare. Plus, like the August one, you are just under $800 so if you have 40k FlexPerks points this could be a good choice. Here is what I found: Cost $722 9,330 MQMs at 7.7CPM Bookable on Delta.com Gold-Platinum-Reserve Delta SkyMiles® Credit Cards from American Express® Click HERE for more info

I have put my skis away for the year as my January buy one get one free AMEX cert trip was fun, but my last trip to Utah was some of the best skiing I have ever had in my life. It was just amazing and so much fun! For any trip, I do a ton of planning. Naturally the first is how to get there. I looked at points, but while searching found a great price just buying tickets in 1st class for about 50% over coach. Plus, since I had a $400 bump ETV, just buying was the way to go to earn a bunch of MQM’s and RDM’s. Plus, booking in the higher fare class gave me a nice bump in Skybonus points to get my next redemption I wanted. The trip was great and the lunch was one of the best things I have ever had…

I will be breaking this trip report into two as I wanted the hotel post to be separate from the massively long ski post about where we went and why. So, first our stay at the Marriott TownePlace Suites Layton Utah. One of the great things I love about Salt Lake is almost all the ski resorts are about 1 hour, give or take, away from downtown Salt Lake. We landed at 2:PM on Tuesday and by 4:PM were skiing for free at Park City via the Quick Start program, but I digress. The location we picked this trip was just about 15 min north of downtown and was the best deal we could find on points. Right next to I-15 we could hop on the highway to get to the southern ski resorts and even closer to the northern spots. The hotel was nice. It is a standard…

I was in need of a mileage run to end the year, but having fun with my dear bride in Utah was better than just flying by myself somewhere and back! We originally booked the trip with vouchers from IND-SLC round trip and all but $120 was covered so I used Capital One points to pay that part. Then my favorite friend, the schedule change, came a-callin’ and I was able have the flights changed from IND-SLC to SBN-DTW-SLC! Yep, saved 3 hrs driving each way for free! Not only that but my upgrades cleared both ways to 1st class before we even departed. SBN has had some major work done and the new terminal is almost done and very spiffy as you can see. Our CRJ out of SBN went fine but boy did the plane next to ours need a new paint job. As always I followed my…
