I have to really give it to Delta with their brilliant cross company promotions. Crossover Rewards has been amazing and has, at least for me, achieved the desired effect, that is, when I stay at a hotel most times it is a SPG one. I can see from my reader poll that a number of folks who read the blog are SPG elites who favor Delta. So the promotion is working that way as well and why not since you get some medallion type perks as an SPG elite.
In December last year Delta came up with a great Hertz auto rental promotion tie-in for medallions. I signed up right away when I learned of the promotion and it said it could take up to 8 weeks to be active.
I checked that my Hertz number was correct at MY DELTA and I could not dream it would take that long in today’s modern tech world, but we have passed that 8 week point and a number of us do not have the upgraded Hertz. Time to reach out and see what is up. I get to twitter and was told this:
OK I send off an e-mail and am told I have to wait up to 5 days to get a response (are we seeing a trend here yet). Disappointing, but it is what it is. Then I get this e-mail.
Really? I have to contact Delta to fix my Hertz status? Just how is that going to work. It turns out it was a form letter sent to most who asked about the promotion as you can see in this FlyerTalk thread. Then check out another FT’ers tweets to Hertz about it and Delta’s response as well:
Sigh. Delta is blaming Hertz. Hertz is blaming Delta. E-mail complaints are met by form letter responses. Clearly there is nothing Delta can do to fix my Hertz status. Hertz has tweeted this is a known issue. Great.
So if you happen to have access to the very best elites of another company, and have a chance to build real brand loyalty, don’t do everything you can to make them frustrated, angry and a little bit crazy! – René
Welcome to a weekly feature on the Renés Points blog. Each week this series covers in a “rookie” way either a Delta or travel related theme and attempts to break down to a basic level each topic. You can read up on all the previous posts HERE. Now on to this week’s feature. On my last mileage run in September (more about that later on) I had an issue and ran into the mess with … Continue reading
On my 12,000+ MQM mileage run next week I will overnight in SJC but all the SPG hotels close to the SJC airport are way too much money (well too many SPG points as I try never ever to pay for a hotel room with “money”)! I love that either cash, cash & points or all points count this year for stay credits toward my Platinum status. Anyway, I found a deal on a car … Continue reading
All you have to do is punch in your Gold Plus Rewards number at this LINK Answer 3 questions (any answer will do). And then the points post instantly to your account. You can then get bonus points for 2 day rentals as well. Not much but 100 free points is 100 free points, and if say our wife or husband has an account also they can transfer Hertz points to you as well so … Continue reading
I had a post last month while I was in Sweden about my second attempt to use Delta.com codes to book a rental in Sweden. As it turns out, this location said it was not participating in the Hertz rewards points program or #1 Club Gold. Clearly I am no car rental road warrior as some of my readers are, but I find this non-participation a bit strange (but then again Delta now does not … Continue reading
Last month I had a post about the fact that you should never start at Delta.com to rent a car because the codes do not always work and most times you can get a better deal with other codes. But you know, I owe Delta.com a very, very, small apology. Here is why. When I used the Delta.com code and link to look for a car, only some pulled up. The “same” car I found … Continue reading
Before my last mileage run, I took a day off to visit some friends down in Tucson. I always try to burn points whenever I can over cash. I am a Thrifty Blue Chip member and have the points for the car to my American AAdvantage account as I need a few more points to get 2 first class tickets to Sweden some day soon on their product. I paid 2200 Ultimate Rewards points that … Continue reading
Anyone who ever calls Delta, when you are done with the call, you get the request about cars and hotels. Also, as you can see from MY DELTA page, we also see the adds on our home page at Delta. Now I am all for earning extra Skymiles and a discount on top of that would be great too as I am always looking to both earn more Skymiles and save a few bucks. But … Continue reading
So I have reviewed both VISA and AMEX & MC. We have looked at the perks and drawbacks of them all. So what card will I use after spending so much time reading all the T&C of all the programs? First some info. My wife is one of the smartest (& most beautiful) people on the planet. She made straight “A’s” in school and takes care of the dozens and dozens of credit cards … Continue reading
On Tuesday I had a post about using just about any VISA card to pay for your rental car to give you additional protection over and above from your normal insurance (please read that post to get some background). Today I will review choosing an AMEX card over a VISA card. In a final post this weekend, I will look at the last few options like an AMEX upgrade or a card that offers … Continue reading
I have rented a few cars this year and have got some killer deals. The first, from Advantage rentacar was just $6.49 a day base rate. Loved it and did get the “hard push” that I should take the full coverage for the car since I would have to pay my deductible if anything went wrong like “with the paint” (the paint? really? ok then). My next rental this year with Enterprise I got … Continue reading
I really like Frontier Airlines. Not because I have ever been on one of their jets, but because they came to SBN and thus Delta had to compete with them on fares. I was able to find a great redemption from my buy-one-get-one-free companion certificate that is a benefit of the Delta Reserve AMEX card so Lisa & I both flew out to Denver for under $200 all-in. I earned both MQM’s and RDM’s (2x … Continue reading
The other day, my fellow BoardingArea.com blogger Gary from View from the Wing had a post about AutoSlash. I do not rent cars very much and just don’t think I will use the service he talked about. But what I did see was Advantage Rent A Car. This little company is owned by Hertz but has, let’s just say, not even close the outstanding reputation that Hertz has. But, with a rate of under $7.00 … Continue reading
If you need a weekend car rental here are a few deals. The Hertz one is nice as you may be able to use coupons to make it even lower, but not when booking. Also keep in mind that if you pay with your DELTA AMEX RESERVE BUSINESS card that is part of the OPEN saving program you will get 5-10% off your bill at checkout – Sweet! The Enterprise one is nice and keep … Continue reading
I don’t rent cars often. I rent like 2 or 3 times a year and that is it, but I needed one for my Hungarian family reunion trip. For the past 10+ years I have rented each and every time from Alamo. Why? Price and just because I always do. Guess what, not any more after this part two, the perfect rental, following after my perfect trip with Delta part one. This time, thanks to … Continue reading
