Apparently this was always to be a part of the program, but the technology to implement it was not ready when it first started. Clearly this is no longer the case and now SPG Platinum CrossoverRewards members can enjoy “unlimited” Delta Air Lines complementary upgrades.

The SPG rep at MilePoint answered some questions, but as long as you don’t over think this it is very simple. The bottom line is you now have a shot at an upgrade after everyone else has been upgraded.

Many of my fellow bloggers have poo-poo’d this as a nonstarter since your upgrade chances are just about nil. I disagree. Now, like your chance at finding a good free beer in a Skyclub, your chance as an SPG Platinum to score an upgrade from ATL-LAX is not going to happen! Unless, you work it.

As a Silver medallion last year, thanks to taking a bump, I was rebooked on some flights in “Y” class and moved up to #1 on the upgrade list over Diamonds, Platinums etc. I also have a post you can look at HERE that talks about all the ways to improve your upgrade chances and, depending on the route, as an SPG Platinum, you will have a shot at an upgrade just don’t expect it.

Another thing that I really like about this new perk is that it goes one more step in debunking the conspiracy theorists who, like I have seen on my last trip to Grand Cayman, worry about Delta taking the step to sell upgrades. First off, most times there are fare class restrictions to even have a shot at buying an upgrade and more importantly ALL who are upgrade eligible will get to upgrade before this happens – now including SPG Platinums. On the flight I was on, granted not a peak flight and medallion light, it flew with several 1st class seats empty!

I am impressed with CrossoverRewards and my SPG card as a Delta medallion and until I reach Platinum soon with SPG I am getting a bunch more perks I would not otherwise get. – René
