I am really looking forward to this coming weekend. Not only am I going to get to spend time with a few of my fellow BoardingArea bloggers but I’m also going to have the chance to get to know some 20 readers of the blog and chat about all things points. Plus, before the dinner spending some quality time on the SkyDeck. Not just all this but to round out the day I will be tweeting from Delta headquarters enjoying some time with the folks from Delta! (#DeltaPointsATL) Plus talk about the VALUE of my Skymiles. Some disparagingly call them SkyPesos; I call them Delta GOLD and see my Delta points as valuable and desirable. I was able to find low level award seats to fly down, even using my wife’s Gold account, intentionally routing through Detroit on the way down. My upgrade to 1st class cleared 6 days in…

Sometimes you just have to splurge. It is also much simpler splurging when you are spending Delta’s money from a bump from my last run. But I will talk numbers in a little bit. I had two goals with this fun run. The first was to get onboard Delta’s “new” (i.e. new to Delta) 717-200 and get lots of photos to post on the blog. I also wanted to try the 1st class seats and the best way to guarantee that is book in 1st – duhh! That worked just fine but I still did not want to pay an arm and a leg and as long time readers know the only thing that EVER flies out of SBN is a CRJ200 (unless the president is visiting then we get a 747)! Thus I booked from Midway (MDW) in Chicago; for me it is only about a 2 hour drive…

Welcome to a weekly feature on the Renés Points blog. Each week this series covers in a “rookie” way either a Delta or travel related theme and attempts to break down to a basic level each topic. You can read up on all the previous posts HERE. Now on to this week’s feature. Today I am flying and I will be making a stop along the way at “the club” that is the Skyclub. And why not? You get good service from Delta reps when you need it. Free well drinks. Some snacks and in the upgraded clubs some good snacks and even free massages. Oh, and decent free WiFi, TV, showers in some clubs – what is not to like? Plus, on a sunny day at ATL or JFK, you can catch some rays and watch the 747’s go by on the SkyDeck! 🙂 But what are all the…

Welcome to a new Sunday series that will be a bit like a fireside chat. I count it a privilege to be a part of an amazing group of Travel bloggers here at BoardingArea.com. But just how well do you know “your” BoardingArea writers? Are you reading all the blogs you should be each day? This series will help you get to know them one by one. Now on to this weeks chat. Want to know who has the best 1st class seats on any airline? Ben knows. Want to know who has the best suites, best lounges, best of anything at all travel related? Ben knows. Keep in mind this is a blogger who spent his weekends, as a teen, as a 1k with United and did his homework on jets! Amazing! Let’s get to know more about One Mile at a Time: Rene – Hi Ben! Each time…

Can you believe we are going to have to start writing 2014 on stuff soon? Next year is going to be an interesting year for us Delta flyers. I think some of our elites will test the waters at other airlines but then will quickly be coming back to Delta! November has been interesting to say the very least; let’s look back at what has been going on in this months Delta Points Newsletter: ➥ A great SJC mileage run and a visit to the Club in SJC & SkyDeck NYC ➥ The Inaugural flight of the Delta 737-900 jet ➥ The perks of the Chase Sapphire “Chip & Signature” card ➥ All the different kinds of vouchers from Delta Air Lines ➥ November / December 5000 point Skybonus for new accounts + updates ➥ Delta AGAIN devalues Skymiles by 3-17% (OUCH) ➥ An answer to OMAaT & VftW about…

This does it for me for the year. This one was another run I had not planned to take, but the price was just way too good and it was a chance to spend some time with a fellow blogger along the way. That is priceless. I will break down the numbers soon and my grand totals for the year. I always say where you live just does not matter if the price is good enough. This run popped up out of Las Vegas for $139 round trip. Picking up 5193 MQM for that is a great deal and low CPM or cost per mile. But how does one get to Las Vegas from South Bend? Clearly via Lansing Michigan? What? Well I used 20,000 FlexPerks points. These are fun in a few ways. You can spend up to $400 MAX on a ticket with those 20,000 points. Fare class…

I made an impulsive mistake. I way over paid for this last mileage run. The end of the year was tight and I was quickly running numbers and the 30 & 31st of OCT worked so I grabbed two more MKE-LAX days via ATL. Most of the other dates I got them under or around $200 each. This one was $242 each day ending up at almost 5CPM and with gas and tolls to MKE at almost $600 for the two days! Ugh! But then, as it worked out, I would have paid 10 times as much for what happened on this trip. It started with a nice effort to support breast cancer research by MKE with a pink tow and luggage cart Nice touch MKE! Only about ½ of my upgrades had cleared before the trip. Not good. My last run all but the first leg ended up clearing…

This past week was an epic Delta mileage run and I thought I would start with the breakdown. The deal out of Chicago was not on my radar, but the price was so good I just had to book it. Plus, the mileage I ended up with was just remarkable thanks to a schedule change or two! As you can see from the above, with help from CWSI.net, I raked in almost 13,000 MQMs and almost 29,000 Delta points for this run. Amazing! The breakdown goes like this: Cost for the two tickets $361 / 2.8CPM Gas and toll $51 Parking $20 Car rental and gas $23 Grand total $455 I had a $25 credit e-Gift card from my $50 e-Gift card I purchased with my FlexPerks card as a credit from my last FlexPerks points redemption in May (you can get a $25 bag credit so I got a…

At last let the fun begin. Fall is here and it is time to fly. Not just a little, but a lot. My first day was a mileage run to LAX via ATL. It got started with a great stay in Milwaukee. I spoke with the TSA folks and was informed that TSA Pre✓™ should be open in ONE MONTH in MKE! Great news to see so many more airports expanding the program. Once at Atlanta I trucked up to the “hidden” A Skyclub near and started checking tweets. All of a sudden I see a tweet from a fellow BA blogger and.. Uh, really, MJ on Travel is one concourse over from where I am right now? Time to club hop! I do correspond now and then with MJ, but it is was so funny to bump in to him along the way. Even more fun, was an e-mail…

After my Sheraton MKE stay, then my Day 1 trip, Day 2 of my run started with a bit of a layover in MKE. The Skyclub there really is nice. They have the “luxury bar” open now for those who like that sort of thing. The Wifi speed is good and the club is near the gates. As I checked emails one alert after another came about a delay to my flight from DTW-SFO. The last one gave me 40 min to make my red eye back home. NOT GOOD! I almost pulled the trigger to change from MKE-DTW-SFO to MKE-JFK-SFO as there were a ton of 1st class seats open for upgrade on both flights and the JFK-SFO is a nice long flight with good food. But, on day two I got lazy and just did not want to fly to JFK (I really should have to check out…

I am so happy it is Monday (who says that right?)! I have been so busy the past few weeks plus had a few weeks without my Lisa as she stayed in Sweden for a few weeks helping out with mom and has an amazing trip report for her return flight to share soon. Anyway, I have a few things to catch you up on in the Delta “world” and some news as well. You can now start your IFE (in-flight entertainment – system) on the ground. My take on this is that while I like this, there have been so many times that Delta reps have to reboot the IFE that it will be interesting to see this implemented. Plus, about 1 out of 10 flights the FA’s don’t have time for a pre-flight drink and this will be just one more task for them to try to get…

Hi Guys, You don’t have to travel far to get a great vacation! Ever think about taking a staycation (& asking a travel agent to help with one)? A staycation is just a fancy term for spending your vacation time close to home. I have done it a few times and had so much fun! The last time, last year, was with Rene and Lisa when they had a great deal on a Priority Club PointBreaks room in Chicago! We know Chicago very well since its only a couple of hours drive from us. We can even take the SouthShore train from our area, which is what I do with my girlfriends so none of us have to bother with driving or parking costs. My friends always have lots of ideas on what they want to do, but what if you have never been to your intended staycation city? Expand…
