SFO-DUB Delta Fare Sale River

SFO-DUB Delta Fare Sale Trip Summary

Click any shot for full screen

We are seeing a continuing attack fare by Delta Air Lines on United Airlines’ hubs and this means great opportunities to fly to Dublin, Ireland from San Francisco’s Airport.  Delta seems to be offering this great deal to Dublin (and somewhat higher, yet competitive fares) and other European airports.

I just posted a couple of days ago a great attack fare from Phoenix to both of Tokyo’s (Narita and Haneda) airports as they were targeting American Airlines’ routes. Plus, this becomes a Vacation Run in that you can stay as little as one day and night and fly back.

Re-positioning should be really easy right now in several ways;

Delta is having an award sale for as little as 5,000 SkyMiles round-trip as well San Francisco is reached cheaply by many airports on the West Coast.

Now, I was able to make this work directly through Delta’s website. I would suggest you put in SFO to DUB and select Flexible Travel days and select the ‘5 Weeks’ option, starting with August 14th. You can search between August 14th and March 29th for available dates on these fares. A minimum 6-night stay is required, although I found some 2 night stays for around $498.

Using this strategy you should find a good range of departure and return dates as well as routes that should work for you. Another great thing about this Mileage Run is it is a ‘Pay With Miles’ eligible fare, so you could ‘buy down’ the fare even more with your SkyMiles and still earn MQM’s!

You also could opt to credit this flight to your Alaska Airlines MileagePlan and earn redeemable miles at the rate of 1 miles per 2 flown on Delta, which is a lot more than Delta will credit your SkyMiles account.

The comparison:

  • Delta will give you 11,843 MQM’s and 1,335 Redeemable Miles (based on 5X base fare, more based on your Medallion status)
  • Alaska would give you 11,843 Elite Miles and 5,922 Redeemable Miles (Minimums, could be higher if you have Elite status with Alaska Airlines)

Anyway here are the numbers:

The Details:

MQM’s:     11,843 Medallion Qualification Miles (MQM’s)

Fare:         $368 (Pay With Miles Eligible)

Cost:           3.10 Cents Per Medallion Qualification Mile (CPM)

This is a route and a fare I would be a buyer of and you could use this as a connection to visit the European continent.

  • Will you be taking advantage of this latest ‘Attack Fare’ by Delta?
  • If so, will you credit to your SkyMiles or MileagePlan account?

A Choice of Two Itineraries : Two Prices

Well for followers of the Elite Mileage Run blog and our Twitter followers we have a great First Class Mileage Run found on Delta Air Lines again.

I am actually currently in Hawaii on a working trip but worked out this search this morning and just had to share for ‘mainlanders.’ This is quite similar to our recent Dallas to San Francisco Mileage Run for June.

On this example you can actually select one of two itineraries, for a fare difference.  My example is $561, however there is another one (as shown in the image at the top) of the other fare ($625) which works out to 6.8 CPM.  Either one is a great bargain for First Class.

Well, here you go.  Don’t forget to first log into your Delta account and then proceed with our booking instructions.

Dallas – Detroit – San Francisco – Detroit – Dallas       August 8th -9th (Overnight)

FARE:        $561

MQM’S:    9,200 Medallion Qualification Miles

COST:        6.1 CPM (Cents Per Medallion Qualification Mile)

In searching for dates (a very complicated process, without much help from many of the online travel agency (OTA) sites) I found only the one date of an August 8th departure for this fare deal. Banner DFW-SFO First Class

Well for followers of the Elite Mileage Run blog and our Twitter followers we have a great First Class Mileage Run found on Delta Air Lines again.

I am actually heading out shortly on a huge trip but got a weird alert on my computer search this morning telling me there was a ‘fare discrepancy’ (make of that what you will…) So I felt compelled to check it out and dig some more.

Sure enough, I found a little trick that will help you great a First Class itinerary earning 9,200 Medallion Qualification Miles in a single overnight itinerary; one which I have done twice myself.

So, once you search for the lowest coach fare (I found these for between $310 and $318) which is still not a bad coach run…you can then wait for Delta to offer you the opportunity to upgrade to First Class for $50.25/per person/per segment. So for an additional $201 you are getting your confirmed First Class seats, food service as well as 50% bonus MQM’s.

For some reasons that I really did not have time to investigate many of these First Class fares are not showing up on the typical searches the public might use.  That is why this little upgrade trick is  so sweet!

Neat, huh?

Well, here you go.  Don’t forget to first log into your Delta account and then proceed with our booking instructions.

In searching for dates (a very complicated process, without much help from many of the online travel agency (OTA) sites) I found the following Departure dates:

June 7th     June 13th      June 14th     June 16th

and June 28th (Note this fare is a bit cheaper at $510.60 for First Class)

A San Francisco to Milan Italy Delta Mileage Run Calendar

B San Francisco to Milan Italy Delta Mileage Run

So, I am posting this I wanted to refine this amazing deal to make it even better for Mileage Runs.  GO it alone, or take a companion.  It seems that Delta is not blocking any holiday dates, as you can see by the calendar I placed above.

My search was for 1-4 nights, but it looks like you can stay even longer at the same prices.

So, to maximize your MQM’s you should put LAX (or in some cases SEA) in either the outbound or the return route.  However, Delta’s online booking system is not liking those ‘enhancements.” I did get the one shown to price out at Delta.  So let us assume you can do no better (although you should keep trying; maybe you will get lucky.)

I picked a departure of Thursday, February 11th as my target, staying over the holiday weekend in Italy and returning Monday, February 15th.  With a morning departure you arrive early morning the next day (in this case Friday) and a morning departure from Milan and still get back in to San Francisco the same evening.

There is the Italian rail system (Italo) which has a depot in the Milan airport, so you can use that to get to a lot of places in Italy (and Europe) within a reasonable amount of time and cost.  The EurRail system is also there. My wife and I just did a similar run. We landed in Milan and got the first train out to Southern Italy. By the way, if you are looking for a Greece run from the East Coast CHECK HERE

Have fun playing with your dates and the many, many possibilities! There are wide-open dates January, February and early March!

The Details:

MQM’s: 13,120 Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQM’s)

Ticket Price: $467

CPM: 3.5 Cents Per Mile (CPM)

(A big HT to TheFlightDeal) I am tweaking their original fare find for us Mileage Runners! I hope you enjoy what I am offering here and the timing is perfect if you want to enjoy Europe for some low prices! – If you really want the MQM’s and you can afford a single weekend to get them in, here is a way to get a bunch!– John @laptoptravel
